Well, one reason could be free advertising. If you adopt the URL of a host that is out of business, but still listed in Google or Yahoo! than you can benefit from the traffic sent from these search engines.

To answer the original question, I do not think such a list exists. Too many companies spring up and fade away, never to be seen by anyone.
