Hey guys, I got a question. I have this very old computer and I was wondering if Windows ME would run on it. Specs are: 266Mhz and 128 RAM. The website says that it would work, but who knows..? So...tell me if you think it will run or it wont.

Windows ME shouldn't run on anything... Not even a 486 w/ a hampster driving the power supply...

Unstable, bloatware IMO....

Go either 98 or 2000.... I mean it's smack in the middle b/twn the too.... Kinda like the middle child that everyone neglects and no one likes :D (j/k)....

If it's running 98 keep it... If you install it your only getting some eye-candy, losing performance, and possibly some sanity trying to troubleshoot some problems w/ it.

This sounds like a solid linux box to me. No need to ruin it with WinME.

I never used ME
Good. No reason to start now then. If you absolutely-must-no-other-option-nothing-will-change-your-mind-have-to use Windows, then throw Win2k on it.

Yea well I'm not in to Linux that much...I never used...

Everyone had to start somewhere. We weren't all born wearing a big black and white Tux suit, you know. ;)

Yea. I've never even seen how Linux looks like...

Well, it can even look like Windows if you really wanted it too. There are some good desktop environments out there which are easy to use and not much different from Windows.

KDE - a GUI for Linux

Regarding Windows though, I'd put Win 98 on it. They pretty much squished the bugs in it before the moved on. WinME was a disaster with very little support from Microsoft, or companies making drivers for Windows.

Perfectly said :)

Win ME is evil! I know it!! I used to run it on my laptop. I've never seen such buggy OS in my life!

Try Linux Slackware. My boyfriend uses it on his old, sucky, laptop and it works fine.

I got a question. I have lots of software I use and I was wondering all of it would work on Linux. Like Photoshop 7.0, Flash MX, Fireworks MX and lots of other stuff.

If you have it and are used to it, just put on win98.

I think 2k and ME might push the compiuter a little bit. When we tryed going from 98 to ME (back when we thought ME was good), it ran like crap and we ended up taking ME off it. Sorry forgot to mention its a 200mhz with 64mb ram. So youres is a little better.

And the moral of the story : steer clear of WinME :D

Definately 2000 over 98. I ran Windows 2000 on my old laptop (Dell Latitude - 166mhz w/ 40mb ram) and it ran fine.

Windows 98 has to be the most unstable release of Windows I've ever seen. Windows Me is much more reliable (although still isn't as reliable as an operating system should be).

I installed Windows 98 on a spare machine I had a while back. It stayed for a whole 2 days - after the 10th crash in a day it was removed.

Linux is good, but still has a way to go with application compatability, etc. Many applications I use in everyday life don't run on Linux (Notes, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, etc) so I'm sticking with Windows XP.

My fileserver runs Linux (console only). It hit its' record uptime recently of 112 days (time since I moved here) when the power went out briefly. I've since bought a UPS :).

Previously, I had win 95, 98, NT4 and 2000 run on a P200 mmx with 64 megs of EDO ram! Suprisingly, they're all as stable as eachother - mind you, I don't have the pc on 24/7, I turned it off when I finished with it!

Don't go with ME, it's crap - for your resources, you best use 98 or even 95[C] as it has a much faster shell then 98x. 9x can be very stable if you don't install internet junks, only install apps that you will use and defrag it regularly.

I always buy upgrades and the only full versoin Windows I have (required to install the upgrades) is a ~6 3.5" floppy version of Win31 lol :D
