View Full Version : Are iMac users restricted to fewer choices for virtual hosting?
wetducks 07-13-2002, 09:46 PM O.K. the more I search and read the more I get confused??
Will I be able to use most hosting tools, such as cpanel, shopping carts etc .
Some hosts offer unix, windows and so on. How does that affect me if I am looking for a virtual host? Any input would be appreciated.
NetXL 07-13-2002, 09:50 PM It shouldn't be any different if it's just a web application.
dandanfirema 07-13-2002, 10:05 PM As long as you have a current web browser, the applications that you use will all work. This is because all the work of processing the information is done on the web server and sent to you as html codes.....which your web browser will support. So you should have no issue with most any control panel, shopping cart, website application of any kind.
The question comes more directly when you consider what you will be using to develop the website. That will be dependent on your own computer.
Good luck and happy hosting :-)
wetducks 07-13-2002, 10:07 PM Thanks, Andy!
I appreciate your fast reply!
Gem Hexen 07-13-2002, 11:30 PM But, maybe with only one mouse button, it might be more difficult
eddy2099 07-13-2002, 11:32 PM Well, being an iMac user too. Nope, there is actually no disadvantage or anything you cannot do on a Mac that you can do on the PC.
The 1 mouse button is not really an issue too. Most of the time, we use only one button even on the PC.
Gem Hexen 07-14-2002, 12:21 AM It was a joke, I don't think it effects performance
You use one button on the PC?
what about context menus?
I die when I don't have a 3rd and 4th button! i can't imagine life without a right-click menu ;)

Mac's do support two button mice .... they just don't ship with them. Anyway, all the contextual menus as available by holding down the apple key when you click.
(Although if Steve Jobs is listening LOL ...please give us a Mac that ships with a two button mouse, I am sick of having to buy Macally mice after spending thousands on my computers)
MP2100 08-01-2002, 11:51 AM :D I am using my two button mouse on my iMac:D
hosting platform is not an issue in regards to what platform you develop sites on. Most common control pannels are www interfaced for us retail end users. so you can work from almost any new browser on any platform.
FYI If you are running OSX you are actually running a UnIX based os. Most host set ups are similar. Your iMac with OSX Has perl and apache built in/included.
I use dreamweaver and an adobe product to make my sites. Use Fetch to ftp your site to your host. Fectch makes it easy to set your permissions etc also.
Good Luck

wetducks 08-01-2002, 12:24 PM Thanks for the info;
I webmaster for 7 clubs.. they all have been on the FREE accounts ( GEOCITIES, 0CATCH..but now..many have to go to paid accounts because of to much traffic... oh well, I did my job!
I will upgrade to the OS X.. but am always slow on this..waiting for all the 3rd party software to get caught up and bugs ironed out!
It is great to see some iMacers on this board!:)
It's crazy.. but I am totally happy with just one clicker...old dogs can learn new tricks.. but some just don't wanna do it..right away
Cheers,
Nancy ;)
michaeln 08-01-2002, 12:53 PM I couldn't live without my:
Thumb - left click
Thumb a little higher - context menu or right click
Index finger - Copy Text
Middle finger - Paste Text
And then the scroll wheel.
If a mouse can't do all of that it isn't a mouse... ;)
cyansmoker 08-01-2002, 02:24 PM Nancy,
I would recommend that you wait for Jaguar to be released...it will be much faster (basically I'm expecting something as fast as your 'old' Mac OS) and you will only have to pay once.
jeffycore 08-01-2002, 02:28 PM why is it that macs have never had two button mice? i was a mac zealot until about 2 years ago, and that question has always bugged me. it seems like it would be natural selection: two button mice are much more useable than single button mice, so they should survive. does anyone know of any particular reason why apple hasn't made two button mice standard? does steve think they harm your chi?

Haa haa.. I like the part about the chi. :D . The one button mouse is sort of like for dummies. You can't go wrong with it.
I remember in the past when I had computer illiterate colleagues and they keep tell me that they click the mouse and nothing happens (This was on a PC 2 or 3 button mouse). I had to tell them to click which of the mouse button. It sure was kindda frustrating. With the Mac mouse, you cannot go wrong. There is only one button.
But all said and done, if the one button mouse is an issue, just plug in a USB based 2 button mouse onto the mac and it will work just like the PC's mouse.
cyansmoker 08-01-2002, 04:43 PM I exclusively use Logitech wheelmouses; they have two buttons, they have a wheel, they're optical. And now they're cordless.
Lov'em lov'em.
