View Full Version : Small Companies - PO Boxes
phpcoder 07-13-2002, 09:07 PM Im not sure if this is the correct forum or not... but I have a question.
Do any of the smaller webhosting companies uses PO Boxes or have one? I am intending to get one when I get home from vacation, but am just wondering how much they normally cost.
Thanks,
Alec
RRolfe 07-13-2002, 09:10 PM i think they are about 5 bucks a month around here.
they shouldnt cost too much more than that.
hostpath.com 07-13-2002, 09:11 PM Ours costs $50 per year.
phpcoder 07-13-2002, 09:11 PM Great... thanks for the information. Thats what somebody else told me but I just wanted to double check.
dialuphost 07-13-2002, 09:11 PM Depends where you are, ours costs $38/year
johnallen 07-13-2002, 09:13 PM $20 for 6 months, smallest po box.
Gem Hexen 07-13-2002, 11:30 PM What happens if they can't fit your mail in your PO Box?
Hiccups 07-13-2002, 11:34 PM If something comes that won't fit in the box you have, they leave you a pick it up at the window card.
D8Mike 07-14-2002, 12:06 AM We pay 65 a year for ours!
chrisb 07-14-2002, 02:05 AM I get mine free. The postwoman and I just take it out in trade. :)
iamdave 07-14-2002, 02:08 AM $27 per 6 months, for ours.
kreativ 07-14-2002, 02:24 AM $18 for 6 months, smallest size, at USPS. I don't know how their rates compare to mail boxes at places like Mail Boxes Etc.

:o :D :D  :) ROFLMAO!
ho247 07-14-2002, 02:59 AM Those prices are relatively cheap, I'm assuming most of them are located in the US? Here in the UK, we're paying about $150/year for a P.O. box, but that inlcudes the Post Office delivering any mail that is sent to it, so we don't have to go checking it or to go and collect the mail :).
Alan
WebmastTroy 07-14-2002, 03:24 AM I had a box at Mail Boxes Etc. and if I remember right, it was something like $12 every 1 or 2 months. I cancelled it a long time ago so I can't really remember and now have my own office, so I have a "suite"-style PO Box downstairs that doesn't cost me anything.

Alan That would be nice, to have the Post Office deliver all the mail that is sent to the P.O. Box...
edude 07-14-2002, 04:10 AM $210/year here, but i'm not a webhosting company :bawling:
nuthin 07-14-2002, 04:14 AM Well here in Australia they cost $50/year

seg fault 07-14-2002, 05:22 AM I'm cancelling one of mine nuthin - so you can have mine
PO Box 69 :P
AMedia 07-14-2002, 10:03 AM Cost is Au$99 a year, right in the city central CBD. Great!! :D
Jason :)
Because our tiny city has grown so much that our mail started becomming unreliable, (Mailman would leave "we tried to deliver" notices in the mailbox, because he was too lazy to knock on the door and actually try to deliver, or somtimes they would return packages or mail saying the address did not exsist) I had to get a PObox. (That was fun telling a company I had ordered a custom part from, that my address did exsist and wanted the item re-sent.)
I have one PObox at the US post office that is $20 for 6 months, and I can pick up my mail 24 hours a day. If there is a package, or something that is too big to fit in the box, they leave a note, and I have to go in during business hours to pick it up. The only problem is, they do not accept UPS deliveries.
I was going to get another one at a mailbox service where they will accept UPS deliveries, but after calling around, the cheapest one was $20 a month. and a lot of them don't give you 24 hour access.
So far I have managed to convince people to send things via the post office instead of UPS, but sometimes it can be a pain. A select few only use UPS, but I hesitate to give out my home address, because I get too much junk mail already. Odd, that junk mail never gets lost.
driverdave 07-14-2002, 03:56 PM Here, in Breckenridge Colorado, the USPS is so lazy they won't deliver mail, so we have to buy a PO Box if we want mail.
Horrible.
Somehow school buses (delivering live children), UPS trucks, FedEX trucks and delivery men are able to make their deliveries every day, but the USPS can't deliver our mail.
And they raise their rates every few months. I won't even buy a book of stamps anymore, I can't keep track of how much it costs to mail something.
Sorry about the rant. I hate the USPS. It's the worst.

forced to get a p.o. box? now that just has to show you how lazy the usps is getting in Breckenridge, Colorado
thats just horrible.
cyansmoker 07-14-2002, 04:45 PM Well, it's not just Colorado.
We had to set up an account with Mailboxes, etc. because the "we tried to deliver" notices were getting all too common.
I must say that the guys at Mailboxes, etc. are very friendly and helpful. I recommend them! (or at least our local branch  )
Jessicam 07-14-2002, 09:18 PM When I inquired about the cost of a PO Box at my local Mailboxes Etc, they said $100+/year. So I went with USPS PO Box. In my area, it costs $44/year.

Jessica With a MailBoxes Etc... You can put 123 Any St. Unit 123, however with a P.O. Box it is P.O. Box 123.
FDrive 07-14-2002, 10:34 PM Mailboxes Etc is pretty expensive. Frankly I don't know why anyone would choose them over the Post Office, when a USPS box is cheaper ($30/6 months here)

Heh, seems like iamdave answered that one for me as I typed :)
MadSkilage 07-14-2002, 10:36 PM $30 bucks for 6 months where I live
Has anyone gotten a 'Private Mailbox' from a place like Mailboxes etc.? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard you could put down Suite # instead of P.O. Box to give it a more legitimate ring.

I would think the rates were standardized too, but probably just supply and demand.

Hmm, so would it cost more for something like this?? That's a pretty cool service.
Blues 07-15-2002, 10:04 AM $80-120 bucks from where i am. Daylight robbery!
johnallen 07-15-2002, 10:49 AM with a PO Box you can only access your box during the hours they are open. Atleast that is how it is for my pobox.
johnallen, not all of them. Some of them have 24 hour access. My city doesn't but a neighboring one that I drive through frequently does.
As far as this:
With a MailBoxes Etc... You can put 123 Any St. Unit 123, however with a P.O. Box it is P.O. Box 123
It used to be that way. At least in my state, not anymore. A couple of years ago, there was a ruling on it, and you cannot use suite number, it must be PB number. The PB stands for "Personal Box"
So instead of the USPS's
Yourname
PObox 12345
city, state zip
You would have:
Yourname
123 mailboxstreet
PBbox 12345
city state zip
Not much of a difference.
There are many other rules too. You must present your drivers license to get one. PO or PB boxes for personal use are considered private, and unless you use the mailbox to break the law, no one can find out the details (real address) of the owner of the box. PO or PB boxes for Business use however, are public information, and your home address (the one shown on your drivers license) can be obtained easily.
After all that, the only advantage of a mailbox service over a United States Post Office box is that the mailing service will accept deliveries on your behalf from UPS. Hardly worth the extra $20 a month for me, but if it works for you, great!
Steve-PWH 07-15-2002, 04:55 PM £42 for 6 months
£52 fo a year
