Who's using LDAP and what are you using it for?

LDAP is a client-server protocol for accessing a directory service. It was initially used as a front-end to X.500, but can also be used with stand- alone and other kinds of directory servers.

We use LDAP at work (non-hosting). We use it for a corporate telephone directory as well as application authentication.

I doubt you'll find many web hosts that are using it. It's just too much of a pain to setup. And it would have very little use in a hosting business.

OTOH, if you need some LDAP help, I might be able to lend a hand. I'm part of the group that supports LDAP.

Thanks for the response Frank.

I've used it before for this sort of application and it is GREAT.

I don't know about that...in a dedicated environment it can be used to manage customer accounts but that's easily done in other systems...but think about web hosting accounts...It could be *very* powerfull...You could have accounts all spec'd out in LDAP and simply distribute accounts on various servers keeping all the relevant data in LDAP. If a server went down, just bring up a backup onto another machine, update LDAP and all is done...

I was just curious why no body is using it...I suppose it is a pain to setup... :-)

Thanks for the offer. I'm all set with LDAP. It takes a while to get the big picture but once you get it I think it's true power is realized.

As a side note, I think everydns.net might switch all of our DNS to an LDAP backend...I've already moved away from mysql to using postgres but I might just switch to LDAP -- I need to do more testing but it could happen. :-)

We use LDAP for network management, more specifically QOS: policies repository.
