View Full Version : What would happen if cPanel decided to close shop?

I was wondering what would happen if cPanel or any other control panel for that matter decided to vanish into thin air one day. I mean cPanel updates all of our servers everyday. Who would we fall on when one day we can't login to our control panels at the same time because they closed shop and all the licenses expired. I mean big hosts should have a backup plan at least in case something like this occurs. I know the chances of this happening are almost slim to none but still what if...

People would install another control panel and import the websites from the backups. Many control panels have options to import backups from other control panels (hsphere for example).

There would be alot of talk about it for a few weeks but we would carry on. Nick is making way to much money to just vanish though. :)

A lot of kiddie host would crash and burn.

Besides that most host would migrate their customers to a new control panel.
And yeah Nick is making too much money to crash and burn anytime soon.

I don't think such things will happen, they can easily sell their copyrights to another company given their popularity. Worse come they just release their code as open source.

If a company is profitable, then why would they vanish?...

If a company is profitable, then why would they vanish?...

cause they find out something else giving them more money with less work :D

They wouldn't, he was just saying what would happen in the scenario of cpanel going bust (which wont happen)

Yes I know that there's a 99.9999999% of a chance that it's not going to happen but I wasn't just talking about cPanel. I was talking about any of the control panels in general. The main benefit of that happening is that all the "kiddie" hosts will vanish with it instantly. This is simply because I'm guessing they have no SSH skills at all and run their "companies" with just WHM (and etc). There'll be like a 50%+ of a drop in the number of hosts out there right now. :)

Well in that case some might just use their backups and buy other control panel , but other than that theres only about one percent chance of that happening

use another control panel and import accounts, but still it will effect services for some time which i guess smaller hosts will cope better with few servers.
But i dont see it happening as they will sell it instead of shutting down shop :)

1. If cPanel went bust 100% of us would be utilizing cracked licensing versions in the meantime.

2. We'd all find a new panel and migrate. Simple enough.
Would a lot of hosts be in trouble? Potentially but I don't foresee cPanel disappearing overnight.

I do hope they have a contingency plan in place if something does happen to Nick though.
Now on the other hand resellers are farked. :)

cPanel, DirectAdmin, Plesk, are pretty much not going anywhere... but in the event they did. I would switch from CPanel To Plesk. Then from Plesk to directAdmin.

In the event that they all closed. Well, go open source!? VHCS for the win right guys? Make your own updates

If that was to happen, then most of the hosts would be in trouble, they would have to re-install the control panels -- there would be some big law suits (I Imagen) and lots of unhappy customers.

they are here to stay....

Law suits? Uh, I think not just because I'm sure in there long AUPs they exclude any liabilities they have.

I was more referring to big companies that use cpanel suing data centers for possible disruption... -- unlikely -- but there is always someone...

True... if you purchased lke 12 monthes worth of licenses and didn't get refund? That's very likely!

Even then most of the clients won't win the lawsuits.

I'm pretty sure that if Cpanel were to go bust, that some other company like Plesk or Ensim might buy out the company assets and clients for several million. If not, i'll buy it.

You sure you can afford it?

This kind of hypothetical question is very much like asking what you would do if Microsoft went bust one day.

What's the liklihood?

I would say 0%.

With regard to what would actually happen....

cPanel is an incorporated company, located in the US. As such, there are clear laws in place to dictate what happens if all the directors of the company were to suddenly disappear.

If the entire cpanel staff were to vanish together in a bus crash, then the company's controlling shares would fall into the director's beneficiary's hands. (ie: The wive's, etc..)

And I'm absolutely positive the beneficiary's would then sell the company assets to the highest bidder. (Probably another control panel company...)

In other words, the actual cpanel control panel is not going anywhere. It would probably change hands, but it will still exist.

I seriously doubt if this is possible, even if they plan to sell there business at any stage, many companies would like to acquire their business.

Blessed.

I doubt cPanel will shut down because as many said, Nick is doing pretty good with it. If he wanted to close, he'd likely sell for big bucks. If any panel did close, the real hosts would just switch to another one and the kiddie hosts would probably shut down.

not a shutdown situation, but this notice reminded me of this thread.

If cPanel suddenly shut down, pot dealers and condom makers would be the first to feel the financial impact.
