View Full Version : red hat 6.2 vs. 7.0
DHWWnet 02-18-2001, 04:28 PM Hi all,
ok im ready to upgrade my red hat box from 6.2 to 7.0 , is it really worth the time and effort ? or i'm just wasting my time ?
im going to update to php 4, so i figured i might as well upgrade 6.2 to 7.0.
need help on this part cuz im a linux newbie :)
thanks.

Upgrade only if there is a feature you can't live without thats in the upgrade.
Usually, upgrading the OS is a big no-no. Especially in production environments. Only upgrade if there are major security fixes that you can't fix by applying patches or because you need certain features your current operating system doesn't offer.
Upgrading PHP doesn't have anything to do with upgrading the OS. Allot of things can go wrong when your upgrading the OS. There may be applications that will stop runing simply because they don't like the new OS. Thats just one little example, but there are other considerations as well.
Hope that helps.
DHWWnet 02-19-2001, 01:07 PM Hi
you are correct, im not suppose to upgrade the OS especially in prod. enviroments :) but the thing is though this server is live, the only ppl on this server is me and a few friends, its basically our backup srvr. ;).
ok this is what happenned, i was installing a security patch at red hat and forgot to unload mysql ,now friggin plesk is giving me a -socket cant connect error, and a number of messed up install, so i figured, i might as well do a clean install and put in 7.0 instead ?
thanks :)

If you already trashed your current OS, might as well :)
But seriously, if you had clients on the server, upgrading would be a big no-no. From what I understand, this sounds like a test server more then a backup server (or as I like to call them a break it until you can't break it no more server), so you might as well just kill the current OS and install the new one.
Also, there is another can of worms to worry about. The OS itself. I know allot of people who use red hat linux that hate red hat 7 with extreme prejudice. Thats a whole other can of worms!

here is my dilemma to 7.0 or not.....
thanks

jayglate 02-20-2001, 06:46 PM We have had serveral clients demand that we install 7.0 for them on dedicated servers, and it is a real nightmare to deal with, the inetd works competely different from 6.2, Also some major software doesn't work on. Such as real media, and others. Plesk also has its share of issues with 7.x, if you want you can most likely fix your current box with a little effort and support from plesk.
But if you are going to reformat the box stick with 6.2 but make sure you patch it up, as wuftpd is a huge security hole.
Dexter 02-21-2001, 02:15 PM stay away from rh7... it's an evil hunk-o-junk! Ok not really but it is a pain in the rear... I had rh7 installed on my server at catalog.com and after 2 days of screwing around with programs not compiling right and other misc junk not working, we had 6.2 put on.
far as i'm concerened rh7 is the "windows" of the linux world...
DHWWnet 02-22-2001, 12:26 AM so far, most people i talked to told me to stay away with 7.0. On the other hand the folks at Red hat told me that 7.0 is more secure than 6.2 ? and by far a better version ?
Thanks ya'all im sticking with 6.2.

cbaker17 02-22-2001, 01:09 AM Weve installed quite a few rh7's on customers box with a few problems on some of the box's but for the most part if you combine rh7 with good name brand hardware, and install any updates its great, as far as security, Ive seen rh7 get hacked just as easily as rh6.2
DHWWnet 02-22-2001, 01:26 PM thanks cbaker17.
Si-WHN 03-02-2001, 10:19 PM from what I understand redhat 7 has a broken gcc compiler as well. So if you're planning on doing some compiling you're going to have fun ;-)

Simon

X-treme 03-03-2001, 12:40 PM In addition to the above, I would like to add that we have 1 box running RH7. We had a few clients request it so we installed it on a box. We have since switched a few of those customers back over to 6.2 because of software conflicts and trouble with MySQL. Most of this has since been fixed with patches but I would recommend waiting for RH7.1 it should be a little bit more stable. I personally like the customized version 6.2 that were are using so I will stay with that until there is a real need to move up.
In your specific case with the box being dead in theory you could upgrade depending on what your specific needs are. Just make sure any software that you intend to use is compatible and tested on RH7.0.
