Yes it is free :) and is endorsed by the US Army - I think the plan is to use it for recruitment.

I don't think the plan is exactly for recruitment. It's to get more people interested in the army. I don't think most of the American people give two craps about the army. (Coming from someone who has a whole family chain in Special Forces and Intelligence)

I just surfed around their forums and found this:
http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=games_army

But the game that has shooter fans signing up is America’s Army: Operations. Using a next-generation Unreal engine, this ultra-realistic first-person shooter will contain 20 single- and multiplayer missions with 140 dedicated servers hosted by HomeLAN.

It should remain free.

Goverment has funding for it until 2006 or 2008. I forget.

according to the articles I have been reading about this game so far... the game will be completely free

a:\

I think the game will always be free

Three years ago Lt. Col. Casey Wardynski, then director of the U.S. Army's Office of Economic & Manpower Analysis (OEMA, the sociology-centered side of the Army), decided the Army needed to make a game. This decision was a new step in OEMA's mission of evaluating and cultivating interest in and understanding of the Army among "young Americans." Wardynski saw games as a great way to communicate with the tech-oriented, online community of young teenagers. He hoped to illustrate what life in the Army is like and make people more comfortable with and aware of the idea of enlistment.

It's a really great game.

But... to pass training levels you need to get online and play with other people. HomeLAN servers suck, and are always down or very very high pings (4500ms range.)

I think once they get that solved and some more things added, even more people will play it.

The Army will distribute America’s Army for *free*

Way to go US Army, way to waste cash :D

Honestly, do you think this is gonna encourage people to enlist?? :D

Honestly, do you think this is gonna encourage people to enlist??

If not, it will make them more intrested in the nations armed forces. Which has decreased over the years. It'd be nice if everyone was forced to serve for 1yr like other places. But that's just IMHO.

ROFL!

Anyways, I watched it on E3 and they pretty much said they were after the geeks with this game. Obviously they are not just after people to recruit though. The US army has a load of $$$ but thats still a lot of money for recruitment.

The awesome things they don't tell you!!

I wonder if they give you a barracks to live in with 100 other guys from all walks of life. Which most trash the latrine and showers leaving you and others clean up. From the early morning 2-3am wake up bangs on the door for a piss test once a month. How about the blaring stereo's! you want to sleep? Not going to happen until maybe 11pm! weekends the exception, don't plan on sleeping until 2am or 3am depending on the amount of drunks in the barracks who are too poor to goto the clubs and after the 20th of every month when your buddies have blown their whole paychecks on strippers. Inspections of your living area which in most cases are shared with your room mate. Yes everything gets looked at, you have no privacy!

Physical training every morning for 1 hour starting at 6am. Wearing sweats when the temperature is 70 degrees and doing a 3 mile run. Wearing shorts and a T-shirt when the temperature is 40 to 50 degrees and having grass drills. I will not mention snow, hail, and rain in the above as you can imagine.

Now lets talk about post life. Only 3 things to do around a military base. Titty bars, drinking, and wanting to get laid.

Leave. Well, guess what you get all this vacation time which you have to take in a window. yes that means they tell you when you get to have a vacation!!

Feeling sick?? awww you need to wake up 1 hour prior to physical training which is at 6am and report to sick call. Which in turn you are sent to the hospital to see a doctor which will give you Ibuprofen and send you back to work. what fun!!!

Oh food lets talk food. chow hall opens at 6am until 8am mind you your doing physical training at 6am for 1 hour. So you will need to run upstairs shower in 1 of 4 shower heads shared with 100 of ya all. Run to the chow hall line wait about 30 mins to finally get some that awesome breakfast <cough B.S> . Run back to the barracks get everything cleaned up and be ready for formation at 8am. 1 hour lunch same story waiting in line 30 mins. Dinner closes at 6pm so better hurry to eat or you'll miss out.

Off cycle. ut oh this means you don't get to do your job you signed up for!! you get to Clean the Post, do funeral details, classes of stupid crap, pick up trash, and other mindless duties around post.

FIELD Duty yaya 3 times out of the year you get to go play soldier for 30 days and do what the hell you wanted to do when you joined. No showers, no chow hall, 24/7 work days, no booze, no women, no naked dancers, no sex (unless you are the don't ask don't tell and don't get caught). MMM MRE and their awesome freeze dried fruits and slop. oh oh K-rations mmmm. ohohoh and more how about some milk!! Yes you get chocolate 2% or white 2% milk oh the life saver until you drink some chunks and feel sick the rest the day. (note 2% is milk, 80% water, 15% chunky, 3% god knows what)

Bills. Boy you don't want to miss a bill payment. Your life will end as you know it. 1 call to your commander and you will get a big whooping $1.00 paycheck. yippee not to mention extra duty and fined. So guess you like to work 6am to 12am for 30days or more depending on the Article 15 you get.

Duty day? yep 6am unless your sick then it's 5am to 4:30pm unless someone has screwed up and the battery gets to fix it then it could be 8pm or your platoon leader is pissed off at his wife and doesn't want to go home then it's still 8pm.

I've had the unfortunate experience of married and single life in the military. Divorced in the military is hell on earth and heaven in your X's eye's.

They love to make it sound cool look cool but all in all it sucks and they complain about low retention rates and lack of enlistments. hrmm might need a group think tank to figure this one out. Duh field stuff is acceptable but ya know the rest of it isn't. Be smart go Air Force be treated like a king.
