i set up a mailing list for one of the domains on my RaQ. the list name is 'everyone'. if i send an email to everyone@domain.com shouldn't it go out to the list? i tried it and nobody got the email. i know because i am on the list and i didn't get the email. is there something more to it than this?

I, myself, have been unable to get a mailing list on a RaQ3 working also. I created the list called "clients" and sent an email to clients@dim8.net and I get an email back saying that that email isn't valid. If you figure it out, please drop me an email and let me know.. robert@dim8.net

thanks

Just for my curiosity, try and e-mail, user@www.domain.com , see if that has any effect.

I've just tried it on a couple of my raq3's here.. and works just fine. When using a subdomain with the domain.

are you saying that if you leave out the 'www' from 'everyone@www.domain.com' it might not work?

I mean, that its possible it will work if you e-mail:

User@www.domain.com , instead of user@domain.com.

try it. Just make a fake mailing list, add your own e-mail address as an external account. E-mail the list, and see if you get a copy of your orginal e-mail sent to yourself.

in the 'email server aliases' for this domain i only have domain.com. whould i have to add 'www.domain.com' also?

Doesn't matter, when you setup the virtual domain, you used www as the hostname correct? this really has nothing to do with DNS (well it does a bit.. but i have a feeling that the cobalt will only process the mailing lists if they match the site. Which is http://www.domain.com, there for the e-mail account is: user@www.domain.com , just give it a shot. i'm interested to see if it works or not. As I said, worked okay for me.

however cobalts are very unpredictable :)

It works for me, though I have one question. Will it email all users or only the ones who are siteadmin? I would like to do the last thing.

sending mail to everyone@www.domain.com did not work so my list still doesn't work or i am still doing something wrong. any other ideas?

when i created my list i chose 'select all'. this put all users under the domain on the list, not just the admin users. i think that you would have to add the admin eamils manually to a new list or delete everyone but them from the 'select all' list.

the only way i can send an email successfully to the list is if i have both 'Allow User Subscriptions to List' and 'Allow Unsubscribed Posting to List' checked. this is not desireable because any email address from anywhere can post an email.

how can i set it up so that only one email (mine) can send to the group?

netastic,

The only thing I can think of if its still not working is that it may be a new patch that you installed, if you did install a new one that is. I know that cobalt has been know to release patches the kill some feature (not on purpose). One of the Cobalt OS patches kill SNMP. So I suppose that is possible.

From the Cobalt Manual

Mailing List Management

In the list management section of the site management screen, you can create and manage mailing lists for the virtual site.

A mailing list allows a discussion by e-mailing between a group of people; the email address of the people in the group make up the list. the mailing list is given a name, for example AplhaProject. The mailing list can include users on the RaQ 3 as well as external users.

A message addressed to the name of the list is delivered to each person on the list. If one person replies to the message, the reply is also delivered to each person on the list (and not just to the oringal sender)

To create a mail list which a perso's reply is delivered only to the orginal sender, you must create a group mail list (a function abalible in most e-mail clients)

So .. even the manual says use your own mail program to do the list, if you want only you to beable to get replys and send out.
