View Full Version : Cable, DSL, or T1?

I wanted to know what everyone's experiences with the three are... Speed comparisons, etc.

I use a 1.5 mbit DSL line with a dynamic IP. The Dynamic IP sucks, but I put up with it. I get, on average, 170 KBps on my downloads.

My next door neighbor has cable, as does most of the neighborhood, and gets less than 100 KBps on their line.

Our school uses dual T1s, and the download time, even at 10PM when you are the only person there, is less than 70 KBps. That could be, however, because of a fully hubbed 10-bT network... :P

Doh! Mods -- if you can move this to the lounge, I'd appreciate it. :)

I don't know how I did that...

Depends on what your going to us it for. Both dsl and cable can be faster than T1 for downloads but it depends mainly on who your provider is and who smart they are. I know you can still use cable uncappers with some ISPs. Allot of them got smart and patched it up.

T1 for upload has a larger capacity than most dsl or cable ISPs allow. T1 is many times more expensive though.

I'm assuming we are talking about home use....

It totally depends on where you live imo. The fastest DSL speed i can get is 768 kb/s but my cable connection can easily get 300 KB/s dowloads from locations that can support that high amount of bandwidth. Someimes I can get even larger amounts of b/w during off peak times.

Latency has been pretty good, I recently had my modem changed and pings are unbelievably low. When I pinged my isp's mail servers before it easily reached over 50 ms. Now my pings are 8-12 ms to my isp's mail servers. Usually most decently connected places are under 150 ms for me, and webhosting talk is about 80 ms.

When I was on cable, I could get about 1.5MB down/ 512k up sec with good connnections (I FTP'ed around a steady 1MB/sec when I was hosted with Domainsville.net). I've seen many instances when my line performed better than a T1, but sometimes very bad (down to 50K/sec).

Pings were great. Especially in games. I was in the Zone game room and someone had ping of 10 on me. (they were 8 with me) but we found out we were in the same city. I rarely saw anything over 500ms.

Sometimes I get 1.4 a night and usually 200k or so upload with AT&T cable.. But they screw up alot and I cant even get out on anything but dialup now and I have been on the line so far today 35 mins on hold with Level 1 support 45 minutes waiting on hold to talk to someone at Level 2 support and now I have finally made it up to the Technical Task Force! which I have been waiting 20 minutes so far all the time listening to Seal and Cher while on hold.. It's really starting to piss me off as I know there is no way in hell a multi billion dollar company is this busy and there prob sitting there letting the phone ring and ring and ring and ring while chit chatting with there chick on the other line.. Im ready to tell them to come pick up there modem and cancel my service but no one can beat there speeds so I guess I will suffer.. note I have been doing this for 3 days now getting bounced back and fourth like a ping pong ball between level 1 and level 2.. anyway thats my rant,, also I think times out here are prob good because there is a very small population (<3000 I think) and its mostly farms and crap..

why? Seal and Cher rocks! :D LOL :)
take it easy man ;) it's about the same situation in Germany, where you also have to be quiet lucky to get a _real_ tech on the phone. normally you just get the telephone hotline assistants, which have a standard question-answer trouble catalogue. so that's pretty ****ty.

Heh... Thats the problem with AT&T in my area... Heck, when I ask a tech a question I uaually have to expalin to them. I live in south-east USA, and all the tech support is in Washinton state... wtf...

God, I hate AT&T soooo much but their speed is great :) .... Some to think of it thas probably why their speed is so good, everyone is getting cut off and getting stuck in AT&T's technical and billing game. They came in a nd shut me off... They wouldnt even accept any payment (the bill wasnt due for another couple weeks) and they had the audacity of wanting to take my cable modem. I hope Comcast takes over in my city.
