View Full Version : rackforce.com -- anybody heard of them?
jayjay 07-12-2002, 04:04 PM I was trying to find guides on google about rcon for Jedi Knight II linux server and I saw an ad for rackforce.com (99$ mo for P4 w/ 512ram) So I head over there and looked at them.
I didn't see how much bandwidth came with it, so I clicked live support.
** You are now speaking with Brian Fry, sales. **
Brian Fry : Hello
Visitor : Hello
Visitor : I have a quick question..
Brian Fry : Sure
Visitor : Viper VX, you don't list how much bandwidth comes with it?
Brian Fry : We have an unlimited program for http use
Brian Fry : 20 Gig for all other use
Visitor : "unlimited" heh..
Brian Fry : yes
Visitor : How much for 1mbit?
Brian Fry : on a 100 mbps pipe
Brian Fry : you mean if you had a 2 mbps pipe for example
Visitor : Correct
Brian Fry : well we charge $275 USD for dedicated 1 mbps
Brian Fry : per month
Visitor : And you only have one provider?
Brian Fry : two providers - full redundancy
Visitor : Now... define "unlimited" httpd use.
Visitor : I mean it doesn't exist, so how can you offer it?
Brian Fry : OK - I'll show you our description of it
Brian Fry : I'm going to push you the page - OK?
Visitor : So somewhere in your TOS, it says if you use so much.. you get terminated? Ok..
Brian Fry : PUSHING PAGE - http://www.rackforce.com/service_agreement.htm
Brian Fry : see section 6.2
Visitor : Ok, doesn't look like a good deal to me. I wish your company luck.
hehe. "UNLIMITED" strikes again!
DarrenK 07-12-2002, 04:08 PM lol
Thats some Unlimited! I dunno why people even bother with Unlimited! Its gotta be the biggest load of nothing and I'm supriced some hosts offering unlimited still haven't caught on yet.
edude 07-12-2002, 04:29 PM lol
Pkspawn 07-29-2002, 11:42 AM Well, I gotta say thanks to this forum, and I believe it was Jayjay that orignally posted about his experience talking to rackforce.
I was almost set to get 2-3 dedicated servers with them. The prices were great. I too didnt see exactly how much bandwidth was included, and had asked How much came with the servers via the live support. They said unlimited bandwidth. I guess being ignorant, I didnt ask them to elaborate on that. Especially since the provider that i'm currently with gives me unlimited bandwidth, but limits the cpu processes that i have available. Although I dont have high traffic sites, its just one thing I dont have to worry about.
Anyway, thanks again..

Yeah, glad they cleared that up for you. I was cringing as I read "unlimited" earlier in the post...
kbeardmore 08-19-2002, 03:53 PM Here is the exact deal with RackForce and Bandwidth!
We offer 2 types of "un-metered" connections:
1) Un-metered T1 is included with the Viper for $99/month
2) Un-metered 10Mbps is $275 extra
Un-metered is exactly that. You can eat as much bandwidth as is theoretically possible over those connections and we will not cut you off or charge you extra.
As for "unlimited" bandwidth. I appologize for RackForce using the term. We have stopped using the term and are in the process of removing it from all our corporate literature. Like you, we are tired of the "market crap" around "unlimited" bandwidth.

I will say this again. STOP saying you're tired of it, because YOUR COMPANY promoted it.
YOUR COMPANY was false advertising. YOUR COMPANY WAS OFFERING IT. Get the picture now?
DanielP 08-19-2002, 03:58 PM I don't get it
Why call it un-metered, why not just call it a T1 or a 10mbps connection. Un-metered is an un-necessary term in that statement.
ForumsAddict 08-19-2002, 04:03 PM lol
kbeardmore 08-19-2002, 04:27 PM We could easily "Meter" a T1 or 10Mbps connection and charge for usage so I do not see how telling clients we offer an "Un-metered T1" connection is redundant.

DanielP 08-19-2002, 04:33 PM But thats the thing, you don't meter it you don't monitor it thus that argument is null and void. So in simple terms your offering either a Full T1 or a Full 10mbit connection NOT an "un-metered" T1 or a "un-metered" 10mbit connection....... their exactly the same thing except one has a useless word hidden in there.... ^_^
Oh well..... I suppose its a moot point but still its a useless word :)
interactive 08-19-2002, 04:37 PM ya i have a rackforce server im happy with it right now it works great no problems and doug is extremly help ful

I don't see how saying that it is unmetered is unnecessary or useless at all.
Suppose they just said "10mb network connection". How would you know whether the connection was unmetered or not? You'd have to go digging through their site to find out if they mention overage charges.
By telling you up-front that the connection is unmetered, they're saying that you can peg the usage of the link at 100% for 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and not be charged extra for it. I don't see how telling you this can possibly be a bad thing.

They're NOT exactly the same thing -- they're not even close! Like RackForce has said, it's quite possible to meter either one of these connections, and in fact that is what most dedicated/colocation companies do -- meter the usage of the link, and charge you based on how much of the link you use. What RackForce is doing is charging you the same price, whether you use 20%, 50%, 100%, or however else much of the connection.
Note: I don't have any association with Rackforce. I just get upset when people bash companies because of misunderstandings like this one.
hKey_LM_32 10-02-2002, 03:34 AM Okay. When I got a Quote for the Viper I was told 400GB limit
Hostkookster 10-02-2002, 08:08 PM Huh? I got a Rackforce Viper server. Got me an unmetered T1. :)
rusko 10-27-2002, 06:09 AM umm, a 1.5mbps pipe can only push that much, theoretically 323gb x 1.5, practically somewhat less.
cheers,
paul
hostingsp 10-27-2002, 11:53 PM The guy all ready sayd that they are changing there adv.
Why are you guys still talking about this ???
BLA      :cartman:
Goldwing 10-28-2002, 07:37 AM Some of you guys must be really spoiled.
Over here (UK) a 1.5Mb pipe costs an arm and a leg never mind a relatively high spec server for $99
I have just placed an order 8pm Sunday, P4 1.7 512k 2*60Gb Raid 1, 1.5 Mbps all for $124
Perhaps all these people slagging off can provide better ??????
Server was up and running 4am this morning (Monday local time)
At every point throughout, the ticketing system let me know how things were progressing ( even so much so that I think I know when the tech went to the toilet :) )
Having used many hosting companies this was a refreshing change, time will tell of how well they perform but if the carry on the way they have started then I am sure that success will follow
Speckz 10-28-2002, 08:19 AM The Un-metered 10Mbps for $275 extra is cogent?

Hostkookster 10-28-2002, 07:34 PM No, Rackforce doesn't use Cogent. Their providers are bigpipe and telus.
interactive 10-29-2002, 12:38 AM rackforce=good got a couple servers with them
