There's got to be thousands of accountants in the UK. Why don't you pick up a local telephone directory and try to find one near wherever you happen to be.

Ask your accountant who they would recommend - then look in your local phone book for a Chartered Accountant. You should have a UK Institute of Chartered Accountants - so ideally pick on who is a member.

Why not use a company like KPMG, PriceWaterhouseCoopers? Just because they are huge accounting firms doesn't mean their out of reach for a Joe Bloggs.

Pretty sure any of the big five will charge a big price.

As everyone has said, look around for mid-sized accounting firms that are local to you. Defiantly ask your current accountant for recommendations.

Vantis are who we use and they're pretty good - www.vantisplc.com.

Your bank / business manager should be able to reccomend a good local accountant, I know Barclays did for us.

I think you should look in your phone book - take a couple of hours off work, and make appointments with a couple of them. Ask them questions about how they work, what they will do for you, how much they charge etc. Then make a decision on who you felt most compfortable with - as at the end of the day they will know what your worth and you need to feel compfortable knowing that. Also they obviously need to be trustworthy etc.

I only recommended KPMG or one of the big 5 as they are good at what they do - why else would they be one of the big 5? Also just because they are large doesn't mean they don't cater for small businesses - In NZ 83%of businesses are under 5 employee's - so basically somewhere in that equation there has got to be some small businesses that use these large firms!.....

Remember that the Sarbanes-Oxley requirements came about because the big 5 were not good at what they did :)

But your idea to go see a couple of local accountants and ask them questions is a very good one.
