Somebody is sending abusive and insulting messages against me from a certain domain to many people. The police is investigating for criminal defamation. That can take months, so I want to ask his hosting provider to stop it in the meantime. How can I find out who hosts him? I have domain (owned by the offender, so complaining to abuse@that.domain is useless), IP address and nameserver so far. Any help appreciated!

You can go to allwhois.com and type his domain name in the box. It will show you information about him, and where he is hosted.

Run a traceroute on the IP. If the last hop before your server matches the name used for nameservers you've likely found the service provider. If not then you've found someone above the hostees provider capable of intervening in the event the owner of those nameservers decides not to help.

Hi beppi
It's easy to go to another host - so that's not a solution
No need to mention the domain - but can you please explain this further:
>>I have domain (owned by the offender,
This adds a new dimension to the problem - and makes it a domain ownership issue. For all I know the "ofender" just might be a person wanting his/her domain.
No offense - I just ask to explain why I asked.
I believe what is meant by that is, beppi knows the domain of the offender, their nameservers and the IP, not that he owns the domain name.

That is scary, I just went to samspade and copied the URL, ready to post it here, and it was already there.
