Does anyone know much about netfirms.com? They have domains for 4.95$ a year, i followed the process though and the total was still 4.95$ Anyone know anything? This is pretty cheap for a domain, don't want to get one unless they're good enough.

Indeed, it's the same reason that Wal-Mart will offer a newly released DVD for less than anyone else, and take a loss on the sale. A loss-leader is designed to get your business.

They make it up -- one hopes -- from the business they get from you.

Same for a free domain.

Is the domain registered in your name or the host company's? That's the big gotcha in a lot of these 'bargain' domain name sales. Hopefully someone can let us know if Netfirm's offer is free of strings.

Unfortunately, Thats what i'm trying to find out, But they don't seem to have any strings attached, their domain comes with all the usual features:

Powerful features are easily accessible:
Administer multiple domains and register new domains
Secure your identity with Domain Privacy (.com and .net domains)
Manage DNS servers, create custom DNS servers
Add subdomains to any primary domain
Forward to files and directories
Add A-records and CNAMEs
Adjust your mail settings by modifying MX Records
Import / export domains from other Netfirms accounts
Lock / unlock domains
Edit your contact information
Get answers to commonly asked questions instantly
Retrieve your billing history and renew / upgrade your account

I don't think they actually need more "strings", considering that:

* Pricing is $4.95 for first year. Domain will renew at $9.95 per year thereafter. Limit five $4.95 domain names per customer.

Taken from http://www.netfirms.com/domain-names/

Their $4.95 domains offer is a simple way to lure new domain customers (and potentially hosting customers as well) in.

PS. Thread moved to Domain Name Forum.

Well said ldcdc.

I have a couple domains with 'em. They have a terrible domain management interface.
If you never need support I think it's a good deal - for the initial reg. I plan to move the domains I have with them well before renewal time.

The only drawback I've experienced with Netfirms is that I can't setup my virtual nameservers.
