Hi

I searched the form and there are so many threads and ways that I am realy confeused!!:mad:

This is my situation:

server1:

A record ns1.domain.com ==> IP1
A record ns2.domain.com ==> IP2

making vitruale site and blablabla...

and evrything works fine.
--------------------------
Now I have server2 and want ns3 and ns4 for him to setup.

so I did this in server1;
A record ns3.domain.com ==> IP3 ( from server2 )
A record ns4.domain.com ==> IP4 ( from server2 )

and then I go to server2 and do this:

A record ns3.domain.com ==> IP3
A record ns4.domain.com ==> IP4

Then I make 2 vitrualsite on server2 like this:

site1: serverhost.domain.com whit IP3
site2: ns4.domain.com whit IP4

---------------------------------------

Is this correct?
If yes; should ns3 and ns4 work imiddiatly or it takes a few days to work?

Tnx,
Regards,
babak

Maybe I'm a bit stupid, but why can't you point all the domains at ns1 and ns2? It would make sense to put ns1 and ns2 on separate servers, but I can't see why you have to create different ns entries just because the sites are on different servers

(please correct me if I'm completely off the mark)

hi

tnx for your replay.

Because if main server is down, sites on my second servers will be working just fine and they are not depended on server1.

Then I'd suggest using the second server with the first:
server 1 : ns1
server2 : ns2
If either server goes down your sites should still be okay

Absolutely (as blacknight said). You should not have both name servers for one domain running on the one physical server, they should always be on seperate physical servers. There's no need to have more than 2 running.

That's what I thought, though I've seen that quite a few hosts use the multiple ns method, possibly because their networks grew over time

for small to medium sized companies, there is only a need of the regular 2 ns.

whenever you are hosting a site that caters to a global audience, you could setup ns's e.g. on each continent for faster ns-serving. but, if i would run a site that big, i wouldn't host them just on my server, i would go for a company like akamai.
