WCSWEB 07-11-2002, 09:16 AM This really gets me mad.....
http://www.anonymoushost.com/

Aussie Bob 07-11-2002, 09:31 AM   :eek2: :eek3:
Andyc 07-11-2002, 09:38 AM I just talked to the person on their live chat and they bought the design from someone else. They didn't seem to know it was a rip until I gave them the link to mchost.com. Who knows though.
Techark 07-11-2002, 09:42 AM THey do like ripping MCHost off don't they .. I think we have to vote Marc's site the most copied of the year.
Sheesh! Why do they all say they bought the design?
In that case there must be some one out there who is making a killing off site ripping.
Why is the mchost design copied so much ? Why even fight it anymore, there are like 10 complaints a week about it.
NetXL 07-11-2002, 11:07 AM It's an easy one to copy. Images can be edited/replaced without much trouble at all.
cedwards 07-11-2002, 12:17 PM Very simple to rip. If i wanted i could have that site up and running in a few minutes under my name and all. Its sad though that ppl will do this. I hate seeing people rip designs. THats what i love the most after i make a site is looking back and seing that i have a unique site that nobody else has. I would hate to look back and say i have a unique site that only MChost has. LOL well this place is scum.
the pictures are different....
edude 07-11-2002, 12:22 PM haha this is a joke  Why would someone want to copy MChost designs, its simple, i mean there are better ones out there..
But it seems mchost's design seems to be so popular - its just sad..
edude 07-11-2002, 12:26 PM Haha just had a small chat with the live thingy on that site :)

Right, not that Im downing your site or anything Kiwi (if your reading). I was just curious as to why it gets copied so frequently when its not really flashy. I guess it makes up in simplicity what it lacks in luster .
I rather like the simple design- its clear and says what it needs to.
edude 07-11-2002, 12:39 PM Hehe, hey everyone lets copy the www.jaguarpc.com site ;)

umm, no  ...besides we have a new design that we haven't published... maybe the current design can be up for grabs after that... maybe
edude 07-11-2002, 12:41 PM Yea.. looking at the design it wouldn't require that much customization ;)
:D
code_renegade 07-11-2002, 12:43 PM It's clean, easy to customise and easy on the eye - of course people love stealing it :D
Rochen 07-11-2002, 04:00 PM You will just have to redo the whole site in Flash Marc :D

EzSnake 07-11-2002, 09:40 PM LOL ... First off OMG!!!!
I am just teachin myself web design and tryin to make first professional site.. I do take alot of different sites and try to "be inspired by them" not "rip" sites.
However even I know better than to just open a site up (prolly in FrontPage seein person obvious lack of design skillz) change a few pics and call it original much less even publish it!!!!
Has anyone looked at source is there any "mchost parts" like images w same file names etc etc??
MAX POWER 07-11-2002, 09:41 PM It may be a rip, but not a good one. There are table errors on most of the pages! :stickout

Samuel 07-11-2002, 09:50 PM Doesn't look at all like MCHost's:D
Alan - Vox 07-11-2002, 09:56 PM Could it be that all these people ripping his site could be his own resellers?

I did a traceroute and from the posts around the forums of the anonymous domains that mchost uses it looks that this site is actually hosted out of india, but I may be mistaken.
That was my first thought, an MCHost reseller.
Andrew 07-11-2002, 10:08 PM The site traces to PA and MCHost does have servers in PA.
Samuel 07-11-2002, 10:16 PM rgr, didn't dig deep enough, looks like Alan might be right.

I already checked that. They're hosted at http://www.netaxs.net/ and are not a client of ours.

Aussie Bob 07-11-2002, 10:51 PM This is like an episode of Law and Order. :buck: :D
Ryan2318 07-11-2002, 11:04 PM maybe its getting ripped off or you think it is because the design is very basic. if it was more original you could have an argument. yes they look almost exactly the same but its jsut a basic and bland design (no offence) i mean its basically 2 brown cells one on top and one on the bottom then a pic in between. the only thing besides that is the text used in the links. I am not fighting for the guy or anything I am just saying that it is kind of hard to prove its stolen on a basic layout.

Don't get cheeky on me. I've got family in your neck of the woods, I'll have you know. I'm just surprised to learn that this very American TV show would be so well-known there, that's all.
An innocent question and you get crap for response. Any adults here?
AussieHosts 07-12-2002, 01:15 AM Crap for response? I was serious! We're just waiting on mains power to catch on and we'll be able to get rid of the boiler. :)

You are now chatting with 'Smitha'
Smitha: Hello

chrisb 07-12-2002, 07:43 AM I don't understand why some of the same people consistently post about ripoffs. It seems like they are playing detective and actively searching for rips. Why? Unless you're the actual person who's site was ripped, why does this concern you, or why post about it? I really don't think you have any business asking a host why they ripped a site when you are not the one that got ripped. IOW, it's none of your business.
Just my 2 pence.
WCSWEB 07-12-2002, 08:35 AM Hi Chrisb thank you for your concerns and great comments. I will like to see when they rip your site what your reaction will be. This is the webhosting talk forum you are free to say what ever you like with regards to hosting. I guess that your site hasn't been ripped yet when it does you will see why people get upset. I also created this thread to make other readers aware of the situation.
And yes it is none of my business but I have a right to say what ever I want. If you feel this thread is not worth it just don't read it instead of wasting space with your unnecessary comments.

Chris makes a good point =)
Surely you didn't mean his comments were not well put.
Why would you care if mchost was ripped, as noted it's a very basic site and most of mchost is inspired from many other web sites.
My site, although not awesome, or spectacular is one of a kind, not inspired by anything but my brain and what pops out without being inspired from anything else.
Over the last year I've watched mchost's design gather elements from many different sites (Clarification: the industry looks good a certain way, and mchost has embodied those elements as others did), but none the less it's not like mchost's site is ground breaking =), actually it's quite sparse and unfinished.
It's lacking several connection point of services and is lacking some key elements.
Noone has noticed but MCHost has no public privacy policy, HostCharge does not display one either publicly.
This is a serious error =)
Come to think of it I'm suspect why you would be so bothered by this suspected host of supposedly ripping mchost's site.
=) admit it, Your name is Marc Wyss :D

That reminds me, some time last year AT&T (I believe it was them) had a half-page ad in my local newspaper featuring a reclining woman with a laptop on her tummy, logo in upper left corner, white-on-black horizontal banner and four-column product list at the bottom. The resemblance was haunting.
At any rate, all these rip reports are great advertising and generate lots of pageviews. Suspicious that they only seem to appear here and nowhere else, but amusing nonetheless.
Samuel 07-12-2002, 01:54 PM Great perspective and an interesting reply to my post.
The way that a service stands out really does come from word of mouth since the internet is so crammed with crap that really you have to take someone's word for something.
You gain the confidence of your customers heart, and you gain the confidence of everyone they meet.
Word of mouth is sadly understood and should be respected by creating the right kind of energy before you are missing it (Missing those confident customers)
It would be an absolute diamond if you could resurrect the AT&T add (Do DEE do DEE), I think is how the tones toll.
Would make for an interesting discussion peice =)

I'll call my buddies down at the paper and ask for some tearsheets. If they find it, I'll scan it and post it.

Thanks for the offer!
Neo3Net 07-12-2002, 10:22 PM Actually if you look, there are programs that actually can download entire sites. (Images and all)
One that I can think of is FlashGet.
So I think almost the most graphically intense sites can be copied these days.
I wonder if it would work to splice your site's images into 10x10 pixel square. LOL :D
Benfhw 07-13-2002, 12:49 AM Don't get me wrong, they are similar-looking, but I wouldn't go as far as to say "identical". Although it looks like a rip, it doesn't look THAT similar.

They changed the design today, a little bit. Tomorrow they'll get a letter from our lawyer for using one of our trademarks on their sub-pages. They didn't even care to change it
