Now here is the weird bit.
It was sent to an address and account which is only used for orders from our website once they have been sent through the online payment gateway.

We never send mail from that address.

It makes you wonder where they could possibly have got it from without knowing we were a web hosting company?

Without venturing a guess as to how the address might have been sniffed out, it's not necessarily the case that whoever came up with the address is the same person/company who used it to mail that spam. It could have been sold, in which case you'll probably soon know it, since there'll be more. Of course it could also be the case that the spammer doesn't waste time worrying about whose address it is or what business they're in -- the whole idea of spamming is sending out huge volumes without having any expectation that any one address is of any value at all.

Aww, I also have the original SPAM posted in this thread.

Yes
I have had it a few times since I first posted.

Always to e-mail addresses that are not actually used for external purposes.
One only appears in the formmail recipient field on a web site.

I guess they are just scanning through web pages.
As this forum is indexed by search engines there is a fair chance any address actually typed into a message will be picked up.

I got the same spam, the only way they can get that address is by going to forums I visit and clicking the email link as I don't post it anywhere for the specific reason of spam.

It's quite funny that they picked web hosts to send it to.

Exactly.
Its not even that good a deal, and who would buy from a web host who doesn't have a web site?

Actually, I can prove that spam doesn't work.

We shut down the odd spam site on our free service and when you look at their stats they have only had a handful of hits for all th thousands of messages they send out.

First off all sending a message in all CAPS is a no no.
Its more like they are yelling at you about their services.
IMHO

I got several copies of the same message this morning. Maybe they harvested addresses from hosting forums and hoped to get some people who were inquiring about hosting.
