God knows where this should be posted, but let's take a guess...

Hi,

would a few of you mind downloading this file:

http://www.digitalgrey.nl/RealOnePlayerGold.exe

Could you post your results as to what the download speed is like. I'd also appreciate a note of the time your downloaded it and from where. It is going at 30 kb/s and less for me and I need some other people to confirm this before FDCservers will look into the matter. Also posted this at freewebspace.net, fasted tested speed there up to now has been 80 kb/s, which is still way too slow.

I appreciate your help.

P.S. The file is about 9 megabytes and is the realplayer install file as downloaded from realmedia.com

I averaged 35.9 kB/sec from my cable modem here in Wisconsin. From another box at FDCservers (though on a different link) I averaged 277.2kB/sec, but it was fairly erratic -- 500kB/sec or so for a few seconds, then almost nothing for a few, then back up to 500kB/sec, etc.

It looks to me like FDCservers' main link (the one which passes through Datacenter.demarc.cogentco.com) is pretty heavily utilized, and their main router is dropping packets (I get ~10% packetloss to most any box behind that router). If this is the case there's not much that you can do to fix it, short of getting FDCservers to install some more capacity (and/or a beefier router, depending on which is at its maximum capacity).

From my own server at FDC:
5.95 MB/s
At home(RR Cable):
92.21 KB/s
From work(Clear T1):
46.97 KB/s

hmm your server is faster then mine atleast
I'm only able to get around 77KB/s from my
server on my home computer. I also get a
lot of packet loss when I ping the computer.

Also when too many people start downloading
from me the connection shuts down and I can't
even get a ping reply. I wonder if my problem
could be hardware related. *sigh*

Through 512K DSL - ~ 270Kb/s

Hey could someone try downloading http://www.dodgyspace.com/RealOnePlayerGold.exe (may as well recycle the file) from both within FDC and outside FDC. I'm getting speeds from 3 - 17 KB/s through my DSL connection and the results for Tazzman suggests I can get better. Petr has been investigating but I want to comfirm to myself that it isn't the server settings,

thanks in advance

From my cable at home (which has a max download speed of 135 kb/s) it hovers round the 20 kb/s mark.

From my FDC box:

And here's another wget from my own server:

root@core [~]# wget ftp://ftp.uu.net/uumap.tar.Z

Seems traffic going into my server is fast and has a stable speed, but traffic going out has a very unstable speed and is generally far too slow. This I suppose would only go to confirm the suspisions that have been posted here that their network has a bottleneck in it somewhere as internal speeds are very fast in both directions. Could it be that demarc router needs to be replaced by something a bit more powerfull maybe...

Just thinking out loud here...

Petr has been trying to improve the speed on my box, so could I ask one or 2 of you to try downloading the file again to see if there is a difference? I'm still stuck between 20 - 30 kb/s from my cable connection at home, so I don't see an improvement.
