View Full Version : [Q] Good Web Hosts
ericgorr 02-17-2001, 10:54 AM In the never ending attempt to find a good web host, I was looking through these boards and came across a couple recommendations, but they were somewhat old.
I was wondering if people would still recommend:
http://www.tera-byte.com (plan #4 looks very compelling)
hostrocket.com (economy, yearly-pay looks wonderful)
I did e-mail tera-byte.com asking about telnet/shell access and within 60 minutes, I had an answer back, which was impressive since most companies I've sent questions to take days to answer or don't respond at all.
Anyone have an experiences with these companies, good, bad or indifferent?
-Edward- 02-17-2001, 10:56 AM i'm hosted with both. If you are after good customer support tera-byte is the best of the two. The speed is also been worked on.
kunalsood 02-17-2001, 11:35 AM Try the Following :-
http://www.hostyard.com
or
http://www.hosthem.com
I was a sales rep for HosThem till a week ago but lost my job! However I would Still Reccomend it to All! The company has a great support team & ligtning fast servers !
cbaker17 02-17-2001, 12:24 PM I heard a couple of bad things about hosthem on another board, I think it had to do with dedicated servers though, so their hosting might be fine..
ericgorr 02-17-2001, 12:44 PM So, Technics, what are the speed issues with Tera-byte?
Are the servers super slow?
What are the problems with customer support on hostrocket?
Is it just that they are slow or are they clueless?
ericgorr 02-17-2001, 12:51 PM Kunalsood, do you host on hostyard.com? What is there customer support like?
As for hosthem. I get nervious around those companies which offer unlimited transfer. It can't be real. Also, I really don't like how they state their policy of "we seldom charge extra unless your usage is excessive." That just silly. Decide on a policy, make it clear and stick with it. That's how you develop trust between customer and company, not by being random in how customers get treated.
-Edward- 02-17-2001, 01:01 PM the issues with speed are mainly in europe. But steve the owner has been asking all his users todo traceroutes and is working to get the speed issue sorted.
They are a very knowledgeable host, They work hard to provide the best service possible. I wouldnt of gone dedicated with them if they were useless.
I've found hostrocket to be rude at times. And there answeres seem to be copy and pasted from a manual.
kunalsood 02-17-2001, 02:25 PM I have heard a lot of good & bad things about HostYard at many places however I heard one thing that stopped me from signing up with them & that is that they have only 1 server & put loads of sites on it means around 200 sites on a single server with 128 MB Ram only I think !
So I will not reccomend them to you. However I have experience with HosThem & thats why I reccomend it eventhough I hate the word  "UNLIMITED"
But I will to wish you Best Of Luck if You want to give HostYard a try because I think you will need it. So :agree: Best of Luck !
:D
kunalsood 02-17-2001, 02:32 PM Talking about the Customer Support of HostYard .
It is sort of OK. If you use the BBS on their site it is fine all queries answered within 24 hours on the BBS.
I cant say about the email support.
Because I send them an email when the company had just started which is about 5or6 months ago & never recieved a reply till now! So I never bothered about emailing them again !
cbaker17 02-17-2001, 03:11 PM Hostyard, actually did ad another server to their mix, and theve committed to continue to add servers as they need them, they had a rocky ride the last couple of weeks, because they just got their new server like 1 week ago, and their prvious server did have alot of load on it, but from looking at the message board now, the servers are now back to where they should be. For 30.00/year you cant hardly go wrong...
major 02-17-2001, 03:43 PM Give VenturesOnline (http://www.venturesonline.com) a try: top notch servers (dual PIII 1 GHz, 1 GB Ram, 36 GB Scsi), friendly and helpful support, and good value for money overall.
Recommended!
gthorley 02-17-2001, 04:54 PM I use Tera-byte and find the service great and the speed fine. I have done ping tests and net mechanic tests and speed identified no problems. Keep in mind this is a major company with many customers and servers. I would guess that depending on the luck of the draw if you got on a heavyly used server you could find your site slower than someone else but this can occur wherever you go. Keep in mind you will probably run into the odd problem wherever you go. Price to value provided Tera-byte is hard to beat.
ericgorr 02-17-2001, 09:41 PM What languages does tera-byte support for the custom CGI scripting? Perl? C/C++? TCL?
Telemetry 02-17-2001, 10:12 PM Tera-Byte has the best customer support around, and the owner Steve goes the extra mile making sure the system is fast and stable.
kunalsood 02-18-2001, 12:22 AM Was the server which HostYrad add from your company chrales ?
(i.e. dtwebworks.com)
Dylan told me that he had leased the server from Digital Technologies on his BBS !
I can tell you qiuet confidently that the server he got from you is the only server he has that because his first server was from Web Hosting Head Quaters & we all know what happened to WHHQ if you dont know see http://www.whhq.net !
MayBe I am Wrong !
Did he Lease 2 servers from ?
cbaker17 02-18-2001, 01:44 AM Nope he has 2 servers with us, he had one with whhq then when they dropped off the face of the earth he got a new one from us, but he grew so fast he added a 2nd one about a week ago.
kunalsood 02-18-2001, 01:48 AM Can you let me know the Configs of the 2 servers ?
Please ?
cbaker17 02-18-2001, 02:16 AM Actually Ive prob. gave out too much information, you need to contact Dylan directly as to the system specs, just because of a privacy clause we maintain :) prob. shouldnt have even told you he bought another one, anywasy both are good servers, they will last him awhile...
kunalsood 02-18-2001, 09:47 PM No Probs Dude ! :D
Thanks :agree:
I'll contact Dylan !
I've asked them many questions via their online AIM suport or humanclick and I've never found them to be "rude". They recently had to move me to another server and upgraded my account *giving me an extra 50 mb/2 gig* at not extra charge. A very nice gesture!
Timothy 02-19-2001, 05:43 PM I also reccomend VenturesOnline. The staff is always helpful, polite, and avaliable. It's a real pleasure to deal with them. I'd highly reccomend VO to anyone! I've also heard alot of good things about HostRocket, so you may want to check with them as well.
