View Full Version : Complex server problem

Well, I have several questions about servers and hosting services. First off, I'm running a website called PSXEmu (http://www.psxemu.com) which covers the emulation of the playstation console on the PC.
Anyway, during the past year, we were hosted on a hosting service called Emulation World, which pretty much did all the server stuff for us. But now, we feel that we'd like to move on our own server. At the same time, we're changing our page into a new project covering a bigger range of emulation, which will also be located at another domain.

Right now, our main webpage creates between 90 and 110 GB of data transfer every month. Our hosted pages between 50 and 70 GB, so our monthly bandwidth requirements are between 140 and 180 GB. Which host can you suggest for that amount of bandwidth ?

Furthermore, I was thinking about splitting the homepage a bit. Since our new project, which will start around the end of march, has a new domain, I wondered if it wouldn't be better to put the old domain (psxemu.com) on another webhost which charges between 25$ and 50$ a month (I thought about Liquidweb for example). Now the question is, if we'd be able to point the main domain (psxemu.com) to our dedicated server and the hosted pages (something.psxemu.com) to that vhost then. I don't know if this is possible at all, but it would certainly help us to keep our bandwidth lower.

Then comes the cost factor. Since we never worked with ad companies before, I supposed we would take a click through solution (since the CPM market is really dying right now) and a popup company with CPM. This should, according to my calculations, create between 300 and 500$ a month. Am I right or do you have any better suggestions to solve this ?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Bobbi

Bobbi- I think this would be better suited for the Dedicated Forum as I can't really see how a shared solution is in the cards for you. If you'd like, I will move it there, but if you are hoping for some kind of shared solution I'll leave it here and let members discuss it with you... shoot me an email if you want it moved.

It depends... do you want a bigger NOC (With more reputation and faster connectivity) with higher charge for GB transfered or do you want a smaller NOC (with less reputation and slower connectivity) with cheaper charge? With 180GB, that could make a price different, might not be much. But I can get somewhere between $1/GB up to $3-$4/GB.....

Oh.. I don't know that you wanted a shared account... But I agree with chicken, it's probably time for you to go dedicated solution/colocation. The price I quoted is for dedicated/colocation...

Hello

You can get a dedicated server with 100GB transfer for around 400 dollars per month (possibly less), and there is also the Cobalt RAQ deal at 4webspace.com for 200 dollars for the RAQ4.

I think you really need a dedicated server and I am sure there are a number of companies on this board who could help.

About the advertising: You may want to look into Comission Junction (http://www.cj.com), which lets you choose which ads you place on your site. I've found that I do *much* better with ads targeted towards my sites' visitors (as opposed to one of those pay-per-click banner-rotation type services, which seem to be mostly offers for credit cards).

Yes
Ican vouch for Commission Junction.
I run ads for them on my free hosting service and bring in $200 per month through CJ.COM

You need to keep on top of all their latest offers and look for ones that will interest your audience.
