Has anyone had terrible experiences with them ?

Today I noticed that one of my sites when down and couldnt figure out for the life of me why, all the other sites I have on my server seem to be working just fine.

Then it dawned on me, I wonder what state my domain is becasue recently I allowed auto renewel.

I went and checked a whois for my domain and noticed that it had expired.

ok PANIC time.. I tryed to transer the domain to godaddy, I unlocked the domain did all as was asked of me and 123-reg failed to send me the authorisation code.

I tryed to phone them, no luck just kept ringing, support online was terrible.

Above all, Ive now decided to go through the process and remove all my domains to another registra do to my experiences.

Anyone else come across this kind of thing before ?

You cannot transfer expired domains. You have to renew them first.

That would be correct - you cant transfer an expired domain, and I dont think you can get an EPP code for one. With some registrars you cannot get an EPP code 45 days either side of renewal !

You need to renew your domain, wait a couple of months and then transfer it if you want to.

IMHO you're not excatly going to get a better service level by switch to GoDaddy

123-reg are opensrs resellers for their domains (at least they are for .com, .net, .org, etc) - and opensrs do actually allow you to transfer domain names out during their grace period after they have expired. I've done it before (and still do it all the time).

OpenSRS/Tucows do state that it can be done on their website. Although you do need to get the EPP code first, which is the problem.

123-reg is only for .uk domain. It is too expensive to register .com or .net domain with 123-reg.

I hate it when customer care goes out the window. They plough huge ammounts of money into advertising and what do we get stuck with, same old same old.

as the ad on the UK tv says, NEW customers only !

I've just had a look at the help section, and the EPP/Auth code isn't available via their control panel. You must ask them for it. If you can get it from them, you should still be able to transfer your domain.

They should have updated their control panel to include the code when it became compulsory to have one :|
