Good job, Mat.

The first thing I noticed were bright pink pigs with onions for feat running across my screen... then I woke up.

The second thing I noticed were all those announcements on the "New Posts" page. Even on my very high resolution, the first new post is right at the bottom of my screen, so I have to scroll to see the list. Is there really a need for all those announcements on that page?

Not quite a bug, just a small mistake... Someone forgot to upload the thumbnails to the store.

i am glad that inet bar is ogne, but why is there so much white space at the top of the page?

Jamie Harrop
04-10-2007, 08:33 AM
White space? I'm not seeing any, Lauren. :s I see the blank grey bar at the top (Which is being used by iNet to post links to important announcements), but apart from that, everything looks well used to me.

There a fair amount of white space surrounding the advertisement at the top, which is pushing the page down ~80-100 pixels more than necessary. It's a bit of an annoyance, but I can deal with it. Still, I would consider tightening that up a bit. Someone with a lower resolution might come to WHT, enter the community and not even see a single forum!

There are still a few old post icons that haven't been replaced too, right? Other than that, the new design is a knockout :)

Ah. :) Yeah, I guess there is room to reduce that some.

I'm still being driven nuts by those announcements on the "New Posts" page...

Could the icons for Hot Threads be a little clearer? The slightly pink shade v. greyish white doesn't draw a very clear distinction. Maybe heat up the pink to a bolder reddish color?

Is this the upgrade we were all expecting or is there more to come?

True that! I almost cried this morning when I got to work, tried to go to WHT and it went to iNet Status!

I though, ok, whatever, then I went back a little later and it said database corruption!

Off loading searches to the slave database server has changed in 3.6.5. All searches were being ran against the master database server which eventually overloaded the server and it died.

It took a forced reboot to bring the db server back online.

Everything appears to be working fine now, and searches are hitting the slave server.

There is some extra white space after the banner. We'll tighten it up shortly (maybe tomorrow at the latest).

Where is the extra space you're seeing? Between what and what?

Bug:

When you go to the Store or Find a Host, the right menu bar (which is supposed to be in the light blue) is pushed all the way down to the end of the page.

This is happening in IE6 on my laptop's resolution of 1366x768.

I have a major, major bug for you to consider. vBulletin calls it a feature, but it is a bug.

CAPTCHA text used to register and within the advanced search area is not only frighteningly easy for spammers to defeat, it is also entirely unusable by people with visual impairments, text browsers, screen readers, many mobile browsing devices and traditional browser with images suppressed.

In some countries, this would be illegal.

Please remove CAPTCHA in favor of the vBulletin No-Spam (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=124828) plug-in! Captcha has little effect on me, but using it is monumentally unfair to do this to a portion of the visiting audience, particularly given the fact that there's a far superior alternative available.

And just to add to that... I installed No-Spam a couple of months ago and it took no more than five minutes. Five minutes of work resulted in us having zero bot registrations after the installation and a system whereby a much wider audience can easily register... and one that is legal pretty much everywhere (I presume) :)

I am just wondering if anyone else has noticed that the posts all feature the little - icon in reference to the Multi-Quote.

When I press it, it becomes a +, but is still attached when I press the 'Post Reply' button. In one way, it could mean that the post isn't added, and by pressing the -, and becoming a +, that it is now added. However, upon further inspection, just under the large textbox under the Reply page, I see:

You have selected 4 post(s) that are not part of this thread. Quote these posts as well, or deselect these posts.

Is this correct or am I missing something?

Yikes! How'd that slip by? Logged. Thanks for catching that. Eeewww.

We tested this mostly in Firefox, since the majority of WHT visitors are using it. We also looked at it in IE 7 a lot and Safari. This is a big ugly one though. Ick.

Not so much a bug, but a feature request. When you click the "jump to post" button in a quote, it requires you completely reload the page to jump to that post. This issue could be resolved if the link were just changed to include the bit after the #. Could this be done?

That's not possible, since the "jump to post" button jumps to posts from other threads as well as the same thread. Maybe ProSlacka could hack something up, but otherwise I don't think there's much that can be done.

On the subject of the "jump to post" button, could it possibly be made a bit smaller? It seems like it's stretching the quote box, and should be the same size as the top line of text, or slightly larger. But maybe it's just me...

That's not possible since the old skin was coded under vB 3.5 and there have been numerous changes in the 3.6 skin. We certainly do not want to have to maintain two completely separate skins for the same site. Also there are consistency issues, we don't maintain alternative skins on any of our other communities because of the extra work load on maintaining them.

I don't know if this is caused by the upgrade but it started shortly after the upgrade: When I first view WHT via my bookmark (I stay logged in all the time) it loads just fine but when I click on a forum it just sits there for at least one minute with this screen: http://fishinghost.com/WHTcrap.gif In some cases it says loading ad juggler or something like that. I assume one or more banner ads are having problems loading. Regardless of why, it's to the point that I don't want to visit WHT any longer because it takes me forever to go through my favorite forums' posts. I'm all for advertising to pay the bills but I wish the ads would at least load in a reasonable amount of time like under 45 seconds. Am I the only one that's experiencing this? I have no problems with any other sites, just WHT.

The announcement icon at the WHT Helpdesk has the wrong size (should be 49x49)

Good catch! I would have never caught it since I never look at the front end of the helpdesk! :)

Thanks for the report..

Yup I get that exact problem also - many times.

Actually, it hasn't happened to me for a few days now but it seems no one from WHT cares anyway. I would have thought someone from WHT would have acknowledged our comments with some kind of explanation.

Actually, installation of (and migration to) a new adserver to replace Adjuggler is something that we have to finish in the next month or so. We've narrowed it down to two candidates and will roll it out in May/June. Adjuggler issues are something we're experiencing across the network and the new platform will be better equipped to handle the load.

It was really bad this morning, I gave up and came back later. It's really becoming a pain in the lower extremities!
