View Full Version : Is it okay to wear a tie with a short sleeved shirt?

I was having a debate with my fiance about whether or not it is appropriate to wear a short sleeve shirt and a tie. I say it is not and she says it is okay, just so the shirt is a button up and not printed. I was also told by someone else that it was okay to do down here in Florida.

I won't wear a short sleeve shirt with a tie no matter what but I wonder what everyone else thinks.

I'm in total agreement. No short sleeve shirts with ties. Unless you're wearing a paper hat as well.

The word "geek" comes to mind :D Throw in Harry Potter glasses and you're all set!

I think wearing a tie with short sleeve shirts looks absolutely ridiculous (unless like the poll said.. you're a manager at McDonalds or something :p)

I'll only wear a tie with long sleeve business shirts (or other appropriate long sleeve shirts).

The second link pretty much sums up the discussion :D :D

I worked in banking and trust and investment services for several years. I assure you that wearing a short sleeve dress shirt with a tie is acceptable. It certainly beats rivers of sweat running down your back.

Hmmm.....I think it may take more than a pair of sleeves to help that poor misguided soul.

At first my answer was NO or only if you want people to laugh at you. But now that I think about all the interviews I used to go to in a suit and the whole deal and the "rivers or sweat" that used to pur down the back of my neck and now that I think about it if you we wearing a suit and were not going to take off your jacket I dont think there would be a problem with it.. I mean the only person that would really know would be you.. Thankfully now I work at home for myself and enjoy the benefits of only having to dress up in my finest fruit of the looms for work :D

Nah, fashion-conscious people would know that either you are wearing a short sleeved shirt or that you were wearing a shirt that's too small for you -- since some of the cuff should be visible extending beyond the sleeves of your jacket!

As far as I'm concerned if you're going to wear a tie and all you should go far enough with it to look really good... otherwise just skip the tie and jacket. In between just doesn't work.Originally posted by Rotifer

Dare I say ... Walla Walla ... it is in SE Washington. A real faux pas, I used to commute to work in a short sleeve shirt, tie and cycling shorts. Hey, when you have a young child and an irritable wife every second counts.

Umm that was not my quote BTW.. I hope I never have to work in a bank.. Infact I would refuse to do it unless there was nothing else out there.. The thought of having to wear a suit and tie everyday gives me nightmares.

I used to do subcontract seo for a firm that does web development on Wall Street, so that's my basis for the "it won't fly in Manhattan" comment. Of course I never had to be on the Street every day, but even though being a "web developer" did mean you could get away with not looking as fashionable as the traders and the like, I always tried to take the "when in Rome" approach.

A guy I worked with had the technique down: got on the subway in dress pants but with t-shirt and sandals or sneakers, tattoos and pierces showing, and by the time we got downtown have it all covered up in an expensive suit, French-cuffed shirt, hair neatly back in place... we'd sit through a couple of hours of meetings and then be back to "normal" drinking a beer on the subway back uptown. That's the way to do business.

But neither of us would've been caught dead in a tie with a short-sleeved shirt.

In the warmer climates we often see shorts on business men, so short sleeves are acceptable. Though the tie sorta makes it look tacky... can't you do the short sleeves and no tie?

Just say no to a short-sleeved shirt and tie. Talk about tacky... yikes! :D

The place where I work now used to require us to be dressed in suits and ties (I'm just a programmer... how annoying) but then enough of the IT dept complained so now we're doing dress casual. Better... but not as comfy as I could be. Ah well...

Hey Guys,

Today is my birthday and I just got home from looking for a nice long sleeved dress shirt to wear to an interview tomorrow. It is sad when the Big and Tall shop doesn't carry the size you need. I wear a 20/40 shirt. I hate having such long arms sometimes.

The guy at Dillards even said it wasn't acceptable. So between my fiance and I, I WIN! :D

But lets just leave that between you and me, okay?

I voted: No, not unless you are a manager at a fast food restraunt.

Yeah IT jobs require alot less than they did 3-5 years ago khakis and a decent polo shirt is about as classy as I ever have got with the exception of interviews and some meetings.. For an interview I would suggest not going in anything less than a suit though you want to look A++++++ on a interview as first impressions mean everything at an interview, unless of course your applying at Micky D's or something..

Frankly, I never knew that it was an issue. The last office I worked in, we weren't allowed to wear anything but slacks .. but short sleeved shirts were never mentioned. Maybe it has something to do with our laid back Northwest attitudes.

Shortsleave shirt and a tie.

I am reminded of the guy who wears the light blue, short sleeved, button up shirt with a pocket. The man is a little over weight with a sloppy air to him. The shirt is a little tight in the collar area and a navy blue tie. Just plain navy blue. Oh and you can't forget the Bic pen in his pocket and the slight little mustache. Over his eyes is big framed glasses. Something you see and think you might could see China if you put them on.

Oops.. Got carried away again.

Anyway I think it is a no no. I don't care how hot it is. It seems to lend this half lazy half tacky look in my opinion. Then again I work in a pair of shorts so what good is my opinion.

Regards,
Michael

I think some people can pull off a short sleeve shirt with a tie, but generally it just looks stupid. A long sleeve shirt with rolled up sleeves is much better.

I will not wear a short sleeve shirt with a tie except under unusual circumstances. Then I will dig my clip-on tie out of my desk drawer, if I can find it.

Love that movie. And uh sure it's appropriate to wear a short sleeve shirt and a tie as long as you're a geek! :D
