View Full Version : PayPal, 2CheckOut, what else is there?
Jessicam 07-09-2002, 05:37 AM Hi there,
I am wondering what other services are available out there that let us accept credit card payments online... I am asking more as a potential client that only needs to accept credit card payments once in a while. For example, sales at eBay.
PayPal charges a standard rate of 2.9% of sales amount plus 30 cents.
2CheckOut charges a one time fee of $49 and then 5.5% commission of each sale plus 45 cents.
I recently sold an item on eBay at around $650+ And PayPal charged me around $20 for the credit card transaction!!! Ouch. That hurt. :(
For those of us who don't sell frequently, is there a more affordable service?
Thanks everyone!
Jessica

Here's what I found out though quickly browsing most of those sites:
http://www.authorizenet.com Can't find out prices unless I submit "company name, contact name, email address and phone number"
http://www.bibit.com is based in The Netherlands.
http://www.charge.com looks interesting but expensive. Real-Time with Virtual Terminal Purchase $195, Real-Time with Virtual Terminal Lease $49.95 per month 8 month lease.

http://www.verisign.com/products/payflow/pricing.html Payflow Link looks like the 'best' solution for low number of transactions. Again very expensive. Setup free $179 and monthly fee of $19.95.
http://www.epdq.com/ is based in England.
http://www.goemerchant.com/ Expensive. 2.39% per Transaction, $0.30 Transaction Fee, $15.00 Statement Fee, $0.25 Batching Fee, $29.95 Annual Fee.
http://www.icbill.com/ Too expensive, too complicated? Accepts adult websites. :(

:(
All of them are geared to merchants and not the regular user who sells once in a while.... Most are expensive too.
Any other suggestions?

2CheckOut is much more expensive than PayPal though.
For example:
==============> $100 sale
PayPayl charges: 2.9% of $100 + $0.30 = $3.20
2CheckOut charges: 5.5% of $100 + $0.45 = $5.45
==============> $500 sale
PayPayl charges: 2.9% of $500 + $0.30 = $14.80
2CheckOut charges: 5.5% of $500 + $0.45 = $27.95
==============> $1000 sale
PayPayl charges: 2.9% of $1000 + $0.30 = $29.30
2CheckOut charges: 5.5% of $1000 + $0.45 = $55.45
** And this is not counting 2CheckOut's one time free of $49.-

NickMahon 07-10-2002, 11:56 PM PayPal does not suck. I've used them for 5 months without problems
Jessicam 07-11-2002, 03:15 AM Many people love to hate PayPal and hate to love PayPal. Hehe.
I've read many horror stories, and also seen satisfied customers....
In any case, back to topic, pleeeeeease if anyone knows other more affordable methods of accepting credit card topics, I'm all ears, I mean eyes. :)
Thanks!
Jessica :)
clocker1996 07-11-2002, 03:18 AM lol i think paypal is the cheapest you can get
use it :)
i do
lovelie 07-11-2002, 06:25 AM If you're in the US, I recommend ProPay (http://propay.com/). I used them on and off for about a year until I moved to Australia & had to switch to 2checkout.
ProPay charge a $35 activation fee, then 3.5% plus $0.35 per transaction. They also have much better customer support than 2checkout. Sigh!
Angel78 07-11-2002, 06:38 AM pay pall may be cheaper than any other solution, but it is the only solution you may find on warez sites (donate..etc), so it could possibly make you (your company) look bad, but they may be a good solution if you dont have enough funds to pay for something better (but afterall you do need money to start business dont you?)
edude 07-11-2002, 12:16 PM Thanks for the work down on the list, www.worldpay.com is another good one.

Not sure if they offer international accounts, but I think it will be coming soon if they don't.
Jessicam 07-12-2002, 01:01 AM Thanks guys!! :)
Yes, I am in the U.S. :)
WorldPay - Seems to be targetted to small and large businesses.
ProPay - Looks good. Thanks for the suggestion lovelie! It's a bit more expensive than PayPal though.
PayStamp - Also looks good but it is UK based. Do you know if the service is available for US customers?
Thanks again. :) :) :)

iamdave 07-12-2002, 01:03 AM PayPal does not suck, but 2checkout looks a lot more professional then PayPal. For personal transactions I would use PayPal, but for business transactions I would use 2checkout.
Jessicam 07-12-2002, 01:34 AM Now that I think about it, c2it it's FREE when accepting credit card payments and sending paying to within the U.S. The only downside is that the other person has to be a c2it member. Most people have PayPal in eBay world....
Jessica
MSSTATEBDFAN 07-12-2002, 04:17 PM i would have to recommend propay!!
Except, when i first signed up they didn't have a setup fee! But they have no monthly fees or hidden charges, and the one advantage they have over others is your email address appears on cc statements, like 'sales@your_domain.com' .
This way customers are less likely to become confused if they see 2checkout or paypal, etc.

you get lower rates when you do many transactions, not the opposite.
You are lucky you only had to pay $20, it is the best deal out there.

Jessica... I am glad you brought this up! I hadn't heard of half these options for accepting CC's...
Just for the fun of it I ran searches this afternoon on EBAY open auctions ( not on the EStores) and this is what I came up with:
PAYPAL- 268,235 auctions
Pro Pay- 4,347 auctions
C2it - 91,116 auctions
EBAY Payments wouldn't return any items..guess that is because they leave out those keywords.
Did a search on the EBAY forums to see what they thought of C2it..but nothing came back..will try a post to get some input!
With C2it, I see that all is free within the US...I think Pay Pal started that way too!
Thanks so much for bringing this up! It could very well be the best solution for my non-profit web site.
Also, as a EBAY Seller, I did have a few problems ( nothing major) with Pay Pal, and quit them.
Then decided I needed to sign up again to get some art books I needed in a big hurry...after 4 hours of navigation, sign-up, email return to site for authorization, only to find that if seller was not Premium... CC's couldn't be used..and I would have charge $1.95 for Paypal to send a code in CC monthly statement and go back with that code. OK.. this may very well be for my own good to totally verify who I am... but.. Pay Pal could make this clear.. up front and save folks alot of wasted time on their always congested site. I think they are always a bit pushie on wanting your back account= checking & savings account numbers too!
So until I know how this EBAY purchase of Pay Pal turns out.. I think I will go with C2it!
Again, thanks so much Jessica, I never would have learned about these options to accept CC's.
:D Cheers, Nancy
And for us Aussies ---> paymate (http://paymate.com.au/)
Cheaper than paypal and aussie based!
divinetruth 07-23-2002, 01:45 AM Wait, for paypal, don't Credit Card payers need to register with paypal before they can actually pay?
wetducks 07-24-2002, 12:44 AM Yep! I just found that out... they charge your card $1.95 and when you get your statement there is a code to use when you return to PAYPAL site..then you can start using your CC for payments. Frankly, a MO from USPS was a heck of a lot easier. Knowing now that there is a buy out of PAYPAL by EBAY..who know how this will change over.
Jessicam 07-26-2002, 04:10 AM Hi Nancy,
I'm glad to see that you found this information useful. There has been very many good recommendations.. although better for merchants than for us customers who use eBay to sell/buy once in a while. :)
Sorry I'm a little late responding ... I've been very busy lately.
I use PayPal too and I was never charged $1.95 to use my CC to make payments. That is strange. They did verify my bank account by making two small deposits on it. I wonder if they charge you the $1.95 and then give you a refund for that....? I don't remember having any charge on my statement except for the amount of the payment I made to the eBay seller.... :/ I might take a look at my statement again... ;)
Anyway, I'm going to give c2it a try next time I sell on eBay. I will also make PayPal available so that I don't "scare" away those who prefer PayPal. :)
Greetings!
Jessica :)

I was surprised to see the numbers when I did a search for C2it! I am gonna go for it too!
Might as well do Paypal as EBAY will end "Ebay payments" by the end of the year... Think I will just wait it out as I am already (Billpoint) Ebay payments & verified. Hope the transition goes smoothly! Wonder how people will feel about this???
I think you are right about those small deposits...maybe this has been started to be sure the CC's aren't stolen..probably.. a very good idea!
Cheers & Much success with your auctions!
Nancy:D
Jessicam 07-31-2002, 03:50 AM Hi Nancy,
Yes, 20,000 is a nice number. Although it may be a small number compared to the number of sales eBay makes everyday. ;) But as BillPoint goes away, people who hate PayPal will look into other services. This should be interesting. :)
Jessica
paypaldamon 07-31-2002, 04:50 PM Are you PayPal Preferred with a debit card? If so, you can save 1.5% by getting cash back on purchases you make with the PayPal debit card (applies to listing PayPal as the only on-line payment service in your actual listing).
Jessicam 07-31-2002, 11:52 PM Hi Damon,
I have a PayPal debit card and I was going to sign up for PayPal Preferred but I want to offer C2It as a form of payment too. So I won't be able to meet all the requirements. :(
Jessica
mk123 08-01-2002, 06:34 AM i don't know why Paypal haven't added Thailand to their list.
Lot of foreigners live here and currency exchange is also lot. Plus eCommerce is also growing well here.
Paypal's help query also needs to be improved, when i inquire about something i got answer about something from their default answers.
I have added a overseas bank account and realised its branch code is wrong. Now i cannot figure out how to edit/ remove this record and create again.
Anyway rates are nice:)
Any other service same as paypal covering SE Asia? (Thailand, Cambodia etc.)
Thanks
code_renegade 08-01-2002, 09:04 AM The reason why they don't support most of us SE Asian countries is because of the large amount of fraud generated in this region. You'll be surprised how many people face-fault at hearing countries like Thailand and Malaysia, although I've done business with them before and find they a very nice lot to deal with... :)
Andrew 08-01-2002, 09:14 AM There's one that everyone forgets. www.ematic.com
They are wonderful. Very responsive and great to deal with.
