View Full Version : GoDaddy - setting up custom nameservers

I have a godaddy account with only one domain registered with them. I'd like to use this domain as my primary nameservers pointing at my server's static IP's dedicated to the task of handling NS queries etc.

The problem is that I can't find anywhere in the GoDaddy control panel that will actually let me specify the IP's I want the domain nameservers to point at.

Do i need to enter the ip's along with the ns records in the same text field or is there another way of doing it.

I.e. i want to use ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com to point to my two IP's.

Does anyone have an idea of how to do this or has anyone done this with GoDaddy before?

I know 123reg will detect that I'm using the same domain as my nameservers and will then show me a page asking for the nameserver IP's - it would seem GoDaddy aren't that clever though.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for the replies - they've changed their control panel layout a bit since that demo was made. The Host Summary is now in the bottom left.

I've followed the instructions to the letter however for some reason GoDaddy just won't accept my ns values despite them being perfectly set up. It just shows the following:

iamawake.co.uk/godaddy_ns.png

Oddly I can create a simple ns.bemail.co.uk host to a random IP just fine, that passes the so-called "Validation" but when attempting to establish legit nameservers GoDaddy just won't accept them.

Does anyone have a clue?

After having spent half an hour on the phone to GoDaddy support they were absolutely clueless. For half the time I was on the phone I was on hold while the guy spoke to a higher level of support who had no idea either why the above error was happening.

All he said the guy said was that he was passing the issue over to the higher-level tech who is going to "baby-sit" it until it's resolved but that it could take 24-48 hours.

That's quite simply unacceptable imho for a simple DNS change like this. The time-scale he gave was for issue resolution - not propagation time. It could be 96 hour duration until I can get my mail-serving domain back and online.

Needless to say I seriously advise anyone from using GoDaddy if they want to create custom nameservers. Unless of course, you like waiting.
