Right now none of the big hosts have serious offers. All of them offer like 1000 GB of space/1000 GB of traffic for 5 bucks a month. Is it still possible to make money with serious offers ? What do you think ? I am still getting a couple of signups at present but 1000 GB space and bandwidth for 5 bucks a month is something I can not and will not offer. I remember what the market was like only three years ago. There were hardly any of these insane offers. Some were offering 1 GB space/10 GB traffic for 3 bucks and everybody on WHT complained about these offers for being crazy etc. but now they all offer 1000 GB / 1000 GB for 5 bucks a month... It's not possible to compete anymore. You can not just use a dedicated Cpanel server and then sell 1000 GB of disk space to the people. If only one of them is using that much your server is full. Of course most will not use it and you can oversell to a certain degree. You can sell 10 times the space you have...maybe even 100 times... But overselling by the factor 1,000,000 is simply insane and I really don't understand how the big companies are doing it. I guess you violate their TOS by actually using what they sold you. I am concerned about my future because I am paying the rent with webhosting money.

Just keep doing business @ your own convenience, glace!
Big players will remain big, but small hosts like us will get their business too. Sometimes I myself dont understand how they offer such promos but its been like this for years yet we are getting business, arent we?

Glace,
Don't give up :) It's our job to not only provide amazing, realistic services but also to let everyone know why these offers are shams.
A number of people will always gravitate towards the larger, cheap packages but trust me: Those aren't the clients you want to spend the next 10 years of your life supporting ;)
Keep your chin and prices up. It'll work out if you strive and push.

Yes, if you provide excellence service and support, you can definitely make money. In this business, different web hosts would meet different needs. Those offering ridiculously low prices would inevitably price themselves to death. They will inevitably get their own range of customers who are clueless but with the downtime and issues they will face, hopefully they will wise up and opt for a viable business with a long term goal.
You hear a lot of horror stories in WHT and most are because of those budget host. So basically for the rest of us who depend on the web for survival, we will indeed pay for service.
Like they say, if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. That pretty much goes the same with life.
