Is it considered a standard service for your dedicated hosting company to provide and maintain nameservers for your use, or do most expect you to run your own?

I am hosting with a company that shall remain nameless for the moment and they claim that "most" dedicated providers make you run your own name server and so have been very slow in setting up a communal one for me to use.

Am I justified in complaining?

Matt,

I can't speak for all dedicated providers, but our experience has been that most of our dedicated hosting customers want to run their own DNS.

Usually, they only want us for secondary. However, if it is something you want, especially if you made it clear you wanted it during your signup, there is really no reason for them not to offer it to you.

If you have your own dedicated server, you really should run your own DNS. In my experience, the less you have to rely on your hosting provider's support department, the happier you will be.
