View Full Version : Question about Cpanel/WHM dedicated servers?
SkateYeah 07-08-2002, 10:56 AM Hi, I’m thinking in get a Cpanel/WHM dedicated server but I wanted to share it with a few friends mine (like split the resources and bill :P ), I would still wanted to keep higher control with root access and such but I wanted to know if I can make like resellers accounts for them with the resources we agreed to share, etc…!
Also:
-Can I limit the amount of domains/mysql database/ftp accounts, etc…/ for them?
-Where can I see a full working sample of Cpanel 4 / WHM (would like to see everything I and them could do)
-Is it possible to offer them shell access (some want to run eggdrops)!
-Can I easy set-up my name servers and name servers for them?
Got a few other questions but don’t want to bother you people a lot (for now) ;)
Thanks in advance!
Andrew
isildur 07-08-2002, 11:32 AM What you are mentioning is 99.999 % possible with the CPanel software, if I am interpreting you correctly.
1) yes, you limit domains & databases (perhaps not the smaller things like ftp accounts, not quite that far)
2) you can sign up for a demo cpanel/whm for your server via http://www.cpanel.net , somewhere in there. Or a company like ours would be happy to provide you with a demo if the situation is positive enough ;)
3) yes, you can offer shells by default though eggdrops on a shared hosting box = one of the largest security hazards known to man.
4) yes, you can EASILY configure nameservers... that's one of the most fluid functions that has been fine tuned recently within CPanel.... many more details about that on http://forums.cpanel.net.
if you have any more questions, feel free to post 'em up
SkateYeah 07-08-2002, 08:09 PM Thanks alot for the feedback :) Didn't understood what you meant on your point #2 answer tho...it means you can only show me a demo if I get a server with you?
BTW took a look at your site...can you only offer 95% percentil BW charge option ?
isildur 07-08-2002, 08:31 PM #2 answer meant basically that Darkorb (CPanel makers) will assign you a demo license to a server that you'll be using for testing of their product. You just need to go through the proper channels, but yea, the demo license is FREE so if you can get that arranged, that's definitely a plus.
Also as far as 95% percentile pricing, we've definitely worked with customers one on one as far as varying options for bandwidth billing. No worries- just send any inquiries you might have to sales@fastservers.net.
Peace.

Those are indeed good news :)
Must say your site and offers look very godd, that monitoring service you offer that notifys your sysadmin and us when something goes down, along with other things make you a very viable option for us :) , tho there are somethings not so good (like high setup, how much you charge per extra GB used )!
Are you thinking in make any sort of special deal for WHM webmasters (think I already can be considered one ;) )!
Also the Cpanel/WHM version you install is version 4 rigth?
OBS: Can you install important security patches on demand?
Thanks in advance for the help
Regards

I love it when an entire post vanishes due to the webserver being kicked at webhostingtalk. I am going to learn to copy things to clipboard............ :stickout
At any rate, CPanel/WHM is currently at version 4.9, which was released this past weekend. I would say 90% of the boxes on our network are at 4.8 , though many people have gone through the update process today. (it's not a huge jump by any means)
We try to stay fairly in sync with Darkorb's latest releases, though the software usually takes care of it all if the customer wants it do.
As far as security updates don't forget that cpanel will normally patch against critical security flaws in its nightly updates. Darkorb has been fairly good about this, especially recently with all of the apache/php vulnerabilities this year. However, if there is something earth shattering that's been released, we do a completely run through of our dedicated clients on the afflicted platform and we'll get things updated and secured as quickly as we can instead of waiting for the automatic updates to commence.
It's much safer than waiting if it means one less compromised box scanning and ping-of-deathing the entire internet.
SkateYeah 07-08-2002, 09:07 PM Thinking in offer any special offers? :)
BTW can you give me a ip from you to traceroute from here :)
isildur 07-08-2002, 09:10 PM I think Aaron or one of the sales minions was going to post up an offer or two perhaps sooner than later. But we'd rather get you to communicate to the Fastservers sales team via sales@fastservers.net for more of these indepth questions.
or give us a call anytime
(hopefully www.fastservers.net actually has the contact details on there since being upgraded)
:D
SkateYeah 07-08-2002, 09:16 PM Ok mail sent :)
Thanks alot for your help, you have been very...helpfull ;) :D
/me waits an answer now :stickout
Tazzman 07-08-2002, 09:25 PM Actually, I just switched to Cpanel/WHM 2 days ago and the only thing I can find that bothers me a tiny little bit is that it was easier to set up the nameservers in Ensim.
Don't misunderstand, it's still easy in CPanel and everything else is way better, but in Ensim the nameserver setup is practically 100% dummy proof. Enter name of nameserver and the ip you want to run it under, click a button and it's running under Ensim.
isildur 07-08-2002, 09:27 PM It's true the nameserver control would be improved with a bit more DETAIL in the backend of the panel. I am sure this is an enhancement request pending at cpanel.net's bugzilla already- if not I will make sure it is.
SkateYeah 07-08-2002, 09:54 PM No answer yet isildur , give a kick in the sale minions m8 ;)
isildur 07-08-2002, 10:39 PM Will do, I know whomever is checking tickets now on their end is definitely pretty swamped.
We'll dig through.
Or give 'em a call!
