View Full Version : Blocking Reverse IP Lookups ?

I noticed on Whois.sc when looking up a domain it often tells you how many other sites are on the server and also gives the choice to actually view these sites.

Now, in my mind this is quite a big invasion of privacy, especially when my competitiors are interested to see what other sites I run (my industry is v.competitive and finding other sites/ideas is like gold dust).

Is there any way I can stop these services being able to lookup my dedicated server? I have like, 25 sites on it and I really don't want anyone else seeing/copying/nicking ideas from them as it hurts my business in the longrun.

Thanks

edit. just to add, I've also seen some sites on whois.sc that DON'T give reverse ip lookup options, they seem to be on secureserver.net nameservers. Any insight into why this might be?

Copyright your stuff then, then it shouldent be a problem when someone tries to steal it.

It's not necc. the design and written content. It's ideas. niches, marketing strategies that's the issue.

I don't understand how some sites on whois.sc don't give the option for a reverse lookup, the servers must have some blocking config there surely?

whois.sc will only show sites on the same IP. The solution is to get multiple IP's :)

On the other hand, if these sites are publically available anyways, what's going to stop a compeitor from finding your site with some other method?

Multiple IPs, I like it. Will take a deeper look into that as I'm sure I have quite a few spare IPs on my box.

Sure a competitor could find my sites, but making it easy for them to link together successful sites just speeds up the process. I use it to find my competitors and see if they're trying anything new or different that could be useful sometimes. Winning is about staying one step ahead :)

Thanks for your help, given me something to think about.

The multiple IP deal is going to be the best, though if they figure out you are doing it they may just scan IPs above and below your main one to find the other sites.

That's true, something to keep in mind.

Thanks for the help everyone, IP changes is the way I'll go.
