I know that CPanel and WHM do not run well on distributions like Slackware, but can anyone tell me what the difference is? I heard that it works, just not in "full" - what exactly does that mean, how doesn't it work in full? I don't really know anything about CPanel or WHM aside from what I see when I login to them, so I don't understand why it doesn't work well in distributions other then RedHat or Mandrake.

Well, one of the primary reasons is that the cpanel software is 90% bent on RPMs....... It's been a while for my personally with slackware so I'm not precisely sure of where their support for rpms stands, if it even exists. Also, the cpanel software is tailored to hook into the RedHat hierarchy (which of course includes Mandrake).
Slackware would be a tall task to assimilate for cpanel, though it definitely isn't out of the realm of possibility.
I'm sure there would be at a minimum 6 to 12 hours of tweaking your OS and cpanel installation by hand to get things working. If it's worth it, so be it.
Perhaps you might want to bring up slackware at http://forums.cpanel.net , make sure you do a search first!

Thanks :)
I had a feeling it was based on RPMs, which are supported in Slackware (in fact there is a HOW-TO on it), but I don't know how well, I always had problems with them, heh, and just compiled by source, which is easier as far as I am concerned.
I have searched on the forums at cpanel.net, I only came up with one result that no one responded to :(

It definitely isn't a focus over there.... I really don't remember all that many people asking for Slackware & CPanel. Perhaps a half dozen in the past year?
Slackware is rock solid compared to RH, in most cases.... but as far as flexbility and usability to those aspiring admins with a month or two of knowledge on UNIX, it really doesn't fit the bill.
IMHO

Yes yes, I know, just that it is frustrating that things like that only support the most popular distributions. I understand why - I mean, even if they were to develop a version of CPanel that works for other distributions, and even if they charged more for it, they wouldn't make enough money off of it to matter. Doesn't mean that Slackware users can't bitch about it :)
