View Full Version : What are the chances I can get Verio/DN to upgrade me?

I've been with Verio / Digital nation for a year and I am paying US$575/month for a server P3/500 with 32 IPs, 256MB RAM and two hard disks (9GB) and 50GB bandwidth.

Dell host offers a fairly better server at the same price.

What do you think the chances are that I can get Verio to offer me a similar deal as Dellhost or throw in some freebies?

Anyone?

Cheers,
Shri

I can't say off hand whether Verio/DN would be willing to deal, but if they don't I would definitely shop around; you can get a much better deal.

I would consider avoiding Dell Host however; they don't have the best reputation. You can search this site for more information, but here's a thread to get you started:

I had all but signed the contract with Dellhost until I saw that thread. Thanks to someone on vbulletin.com's forums for pointing that out :)

Hey Shri :) good to see you here :) You got a cool site there dude :)

I think the best person to answere this question would be DN themselves. Shoot them an email, if they dunt, there are many more excellent d-server companies out there.

I'm still going to consider them dellhost in the background as they offer tremendous value in the hardware that they give. I've enabled PHP's zlib compression on our servers to a 40-60K page gets shrunk into 8K. This makes bandwidth a little less relevant as it makes CPU.

What are the other alternatives? (assuming verio does not upgrade me) Rackspace?

These are all companies I would feel comfortable with:
http://www.datapipe.com
http://www.tera-byte.net
http://www.catalog.com
http://www.dialtoneinternet.com

I like what I see with dialtone's servers so far. Unfortunately they don't offer dual hard disks as standard on the lower end server. I've emailed them to find out how much a 4001 with 512MB RAM and 2 SCSI hard disks would set me back.

Love their control panel also.

AND they have no setup fees! Brilliant move.

Hi Shri

I can vouch for Rackspace . I have a couple of machines with them for almost a year now. Tech support Brilliant. Speeds , too good , even from here in India.

Their only problem is they provide only 10 gigs on their basic package. I know that you do get lots of traffic on your site.

Also try if you could bargain a bit with Rackspace. I did and they gave me free 10 Gigs of bandwith a month on my second deal with them . If you would want i could give you the sales person i spoke to .

And yes. I do visit your site atleast once a week.

Hi everyone,

First of all thanks for your advice! I have finally settled with dialtoneinternet.com. I ended up getting a really good deal on two medium-end servers (512MB / 700Mhz CPU) which really helps kick start some hosting ideas I have with my "spare" server. I dealt with a guy called Rolando Munoz who went out of his way to get me a good deal.

Manish, thanks for the kind words. Its a pleasure to wander around on the net and find people who know about GM ;)

Once again, thanks everyone! Its been very educational hanging out on these forums.
