I am looking for a web host that provide the following (in addition to the standard features):
- Java Servlet prefferably 2.2
- JSP 1.0 or above
- Some database access with JDBC driver
- some sub-domain included with the plan
- prefferably below US$30 (or around that price).
I don't really worry much with the bandwith, space allocation since this will primarily for my own personal usage and experience.
I look at the previous thread before and found that most of the thread are out-of-date. I did contacted host hostrocket (is that correct name?) and they did not provide any servlet support at all.
Can anyone help me to give some recommendation of which provider are reliable in term of performance and support based on your experience (I am new to this, in fact I just register my FIRST domain name today using dotster.com, any comment) ?
I was looking at CWI and luckily I found this website before I decide to host with them. Any good tips that all the guru's over here can over?
TIA
Irawan (please pardon my english, as it is not my native languages).

check out http://www.hostspot.com it has a host directory with a compare utility.you can get price comparisons there as well.
Thank for the reply.
I did use some of the host search site, however, not many of them has option (advance search) to include servlet and/or jsp in the option.
Also, after reading about CWI, I was hoping to get some 'impartial' review about what people use and experience. Most of the web host reviewer doesn't have review for the host that I have in mind (servlet support with a resonable monthly fees).
I am trying to make sure to at least consult with more experience people in the forum before I decide which one I will choose. Since this will primarily for my own learning experience (that is servlet and jsp prog, not the getting bitten by the company ;-) this will have to come from my own limited amount of money.
Thank you.
Irawan.

I have an idea for you. If this is just going to be for a learning experience, why not get a cheap machine and install linux (or whatever else) on it? You don't even need a domain name and better yet, no monthly fees. There are some decent books out there about running linux, so even if you don't know anything about it, you can get a server up. Another bonus is that YOU decide what software is installed and if there's something new you want to try, all you have to do is install it. I hope this helps.

Also, this way when ya screw something up, its a simple reinstall. Trust me, I don't mean that in an insulting way. First time I did a linux install I had no clue on how to do a proper reboot....so, hosed the file system, reformat n reinstall time.
Think I figured it out before I got the the 5th reinstall. ^_^
cheapbytes.com's a decent place to get a variety of flavors cheap.
We use Dotster for our domains, few hiccups here n there, but smoother than most other registrars we've used.
Use the search feature in the top right corner to see if anyone else heres also inquired about those features.
Good luck!

You may want to check out http://www.jspin.com, I believe they have some links to JSP hosting companies there.
Thanks for all the reply.
I have installed linux installed before (didn't mastered it yet--but it did work). Actually I have Linux installed in one of my partition but I just haven't found the email client that I like to handle mine (I am using eudora pro currently). The reason for that also is for my own portfolio. I am currently working with WebSphere Application Server for AS/400 as a consultant. But I want to have more exposure to other platform and product. The area I am working is mostly regarding Servlet and integration to the backend database on AS/400.
I love linux, it's just that I probably won't have much time to maintain that. Plus, I am using cable modem currently, they don't allowed server. I want to show love to make some application that I can share with my friends (and again also as part of my portfolio -- currently looking for a new job). Part of the portfolio reasoning is that what I am working on currently is not a complete solution for the client, I am usually called in upon some specific problem that some internal group (or direct for my client) or it is a confidential material for the company. Therefore, I cannot use that as a proof that I know what I told them I am capable of. I don't say that I am a master of Servlet, and EJB. But I would categorize myself to have a decent knowledge about that (but I am sure there are a lot more people outthere that know more than me).
I was planning to have the website to host my own personal application (servlet) as well as my high-school alumni website and also I may be involve with a project for my friend's company (small company) that will involve e-business (in a smaller scale). Thus I can use this a proof of concept for him before he got his own stuff.
So the main reason is for Maintenance (travelling a lot sometime for a project), able to share it to public, therefore I can dedicate my limited free time to just build the stuff I enjoy.
btw, please pardon the error / confusing sentence above... today is not one of my best day... (just got my appraisal, and not happy with what they think my value for the company) But it's friday....
Thanks again for all the help.
