View Full Version : Just bought brand new HP 19" LCD... TERRIBLE quality!!!

My 17" samsung lcd which I had been using for the past 3 years just died on me yesterday. So I went out and bought a new 19" HP lcd but the quality of this HP lcd is so TERRIBLE I cannot put it into words.

Here is a picture of it:
http://www.johnlewis.com/jl_assets/product/230231860.jpg

The quality difference between this HP and my samsung that I was using before cannot even be compared. This HP lcd is TERRIBLE! Everything looks very faint and washed out. The colors are not bright... they are very washed out and faint. The text is also faint and washed. It's awful!!

My mother has a brand new Dell lcd and the Dell lcd quality is very nice. Dell seems to have better quality with their lcd's now because in the past I didn't like them. Similar to the quality of what my samsung used to be but NOT this HP... it is terrible! Even when I adjust it... it always looks washed out and faint.

Anybody else here ever had this problem with the specific lcd model I'm using? I do remember in the past when I tested out HP lcd's I had this same problem. I don't think HP makes good lcd's at all. It's such a HUGE difference in quality.

I'm taking this rubbish back for a refund, VERY disappointed.

Now I have to search more for another 19" lcd with built in speakers. It must have built in speakers...

Thanks for the suggestion, I like how it has built in speakers. But the stand on that monitor seems to be very tall... so I hope you can slide the monitor downwards on that stand? I can't tell. My desk has two levels (hope you know what I mean). So the monitor will be sitting on a higher shelf so it can't be that tall.

I found this samsung lcd which I like:
http://www.techonweb.com/products/productdetail.aspx?id=D51462&src=PG

I really like the samsung lcd's but now I am worried that it's going to die on me again and go dark.

But I am sooooo mad right now. Circuit City basically robbed me of $45. I just returned the terrible 19" HP lcd I bought earlier today and they REFUSED to issue a full refund and took a 15% restocking fee when I specifically ASKED them BEFORE I bought the lcd there if I could return it if it was defective or no good. I was told they would waive the restocking fee if that happened and would issue a FULL refund if I came back that same day with it... but they LIED. I got into a fight with the manager at the store there because they refused to refund me of a monitor that I had just bought 2 hours ago and it was defective! That monitor was really lousy and I was on tech support with HP for over 30 minutes trying to see why it was such bad quality. I'll never shop at Circuit City again. The manager there was one of the biggest jerks I've come across in a long time. And he conveniently could not locate the person who told me they would waive the restocking fee when that person was there just two hours ago! I'm ticked!

I just threw $45 out the window.... for nothing.

Are digital lcd's really a lot better than analog lcd's?

I'm trying to figure out if the 19" HP lcd that I returned earlier today was a digital or analog lcd? I never checked that.

It wasn't a digital was it? Trying to find that out...

Here is the 19" HP lcd again... which I returned earlier today because the quality was very bad. I can't tell if that was an analog or digital... can you see where it says which one it was? It doesn't tell me there whether it was analog or digital unless I am overlooking it?

Did it have the standard 15pin VGA connector to go on your video card, if so it was running analog. Digital can be sharper since your video card doesnt have to convert it to analog and the monitor back to digital. But your video card must have the digital connector for the monitor.

Frosty, check out http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254005

I'm posting on it right now and it has been working great since I bought it. I really can't compare it to other LCDs, as it's the first one I bought, but I love it. And the price can't be beat! I know it's an off-brand, but I took the chance and it seems to run perfectly. :agree:

Frosty

trau,

I see, I think it was running analog in that case.

I think I'm just going to go ahead and purchase a 19" Dell digital lcd I found at dell today. They have both analog and digital lcd's and I was going to buy the digital. And then buy the sound bar for it as pictured in the below link... this way I can sort of have "built in" speakers. I just HATE separate speakers clutterring up my desk:

http://file.bodnara.co.kr/up/09/1120465129-soundbar.jpg

Chris Armstrong,
Thanks for the suggesstion but that lcd does not have built in speakers and I can't attach the Dell sound bar to it because that only fits dell lcd's. A built in speaker is a must, I just despise separate speakers =(

Frosty, my mistake! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254001 is actually the model I have, and it has built-in speakers.

Frosty
03-25-2007, 09:51 AM
I see, yes I like the built in speakers :)

The only problem with the one you showed me is that it's going to sit too far forward... I like my monitor to be as far back against the wall as possible. You can see the monitor sits a little too far forward on the stand. Sorry I know I am too picky!

See the difference... this samsung monitor will sit farther back against the wall because it sits farther back on the stand:

http://www.prodimex.ch/partage/Images_Pdts/SM913BM.jpg

I am too picky

Right now I can't decide between getting the above 19" digital samsung lcd or the 19" digital dell lcd with the attachable sound bar.

Here is a picture of the dell lcd:

http://www.stuartconnections.com/ebay/Peripherals/LCDs/Dell_1907FP/DSC02100sw.jpg

http://images.dealnews.com/products/images/10000/14823-medium

They will both turn out to be the same price... I can't decide. I wish I could test both of them out then I could easily decide... but that's difficult to do when ordering online thanks to S&H costs being too expensive =(

If you had to choose between the two lcd's... which would you pick of those two? I can't decide!

I use twin 19" LCDs - one Dell UltraSharp 1907FP (right now they are $246) and one Samsung 910T. Both are very good, but you must use/have digital output(s) on your graphics card and on the LCD monitors to get a quality image. I have the Samsung setup so it has about the same brightness, color, and contrast as my old Diamondtron 21" CRT had. This way when I develop I can choose colors etcetera that will look decent on CRT's and LCD's.

I have another Dell UltraSharp 1907FP brand-new in the box as I bought two when they were on sale and I had a coupon along with free shipping.

Frosty, I have a recommendation for you that might surprise you. About a year ago I got an LCD monitor from Walmart. It was late at night and I was in a pinch so I figured I would give walmart a try. Afterall they I have never had problems getting a refund there, so what did I have to loose? I got a 19" DCLCD and was surprised to find it worked better than the dell monitor that had died earlier in the day. To make a long story short, I am still using that monior on my primary PC and am very happy with it. It has a sharp, clear and bright picture. I do not know if Walmart still carries this monitor but you may want to look.

Nice, Anatec1. I have a 32" westinghouse as the monitor on my secondary pc. Its on the other side of my corner desk and is mostly used as a TV. But if frosty has a two level desk with limited space, something like that would probably be too large.

Edit: Frosty, of the two monitors you have posted I would choose the Samsung. My experience with Dell's LCD monitors was not the greatest and Samsung is generally considered top of the line.

My experience with Dell's LCD monitors

Was that their cheapie models or their better models?

They normally have the same specs as Samsungs (produced by them) and when I purchased my 1st UltraSharp model (I actually own 3) it has better specs than my Samsung 910T which was considered by all to be the best 19" at the time..I purchased the 1st Dell UltraSharp 19" August 2004 and it's still on my desk. It along with the Samsung 910T is left on 24x7, although my computer is put to sleep or shut-down.

I just got back from Office Depot and bought a 19" lcd there 30 minutes ago which will only cost $150 after I get the rebate but I don't know if I'm completely satisfied with it.

I bought this LCD shown here (Hanns-G JC199D):
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://images.tigerdirect.ca/itemdetails/H94-1914/H94-1914-call1-ca.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp%3FEdpNo%3D2450736%26CatId%3D170&h=160&w=144&sz=10&hl=en&start=1&um=1&tbnid=Ae2B9Jhs-MbjsM:&tbnh=98&tbnw=88&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dhanns%2Bjc199d%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN

The quality of this lcd is MUCH better than the terrible HP lcd was but definitely still not as good as my samsung lcd was or my dell lcd was. The display is just a TINY bit washed out... I haven't messed with the settings so maybe if I adjust it I can make it better?

The lcd I just bought is VERY similar to the one Chris Armstrong is using just that it's a different model # and this lcd just like his doesn't sit close enough to the wall :(

I like my monitor to sit as far back as possible... right now it sits too far forward just a little bit. Here is a pic of it on my desk (excuse the mess... I still haven't organized/hidden all the cords).

But I can't tell if this lcd is digital or analog? Can you guys tell which one it is??? Because I just bought a new Dell desktop with Vista which does have a digital card... so I would much rather have a digital lcd to match.

And I STILL want to try out the 19" Dell ultrasharp lcd to see if I like it better and also that samsung lcd before i settle for this lcd I just bought. I am too picky! Does the dell lcd sit farther back though?... I think it will because my mother's 17" dell lcd sits much farther back to the wall which is what I want....

What i really like about the lcd I just bought was the price! It was only $150 compared to the $300 I would end up paying for my dell or samsung lcd... but I would rather pay $150 if I would like those better...

Edit: Galaxy-Hosts,
Yes I have noticed that samsung was slightly better than the dell. But maybe the dell ultrasharp (digital) will be very nice with my digital new dell computer).

I just messed around with this Hanns-G lcd's settings and it didn't help. Everything is just a tad washed out looking (it's starting to irritate me to look at it). It's not bad quality but definitely NOT nearly as good as my samsung and dell lcd was. Plus the speakers are not that good. Even when I have my computer AND lcd sound turned all the way up as far as it can go... the sound is faint... it's always low.

I think if I got the dell ultrasharp digital lcd or the samsung... I would be happier with that even though I would have to pay $150 more for it I think it would be worth it? especially since my new dell desktop has a digital card.

But is this Hanns-G lcd digital??? Right now I have it plugged into my old XP computer which has an analog card... so maybe this lcd would look much better on my dell computer which has the digital card? Is that how it works... that digital lcd's will only show the benefits of digital if the computer has a digital card, right?

trau
03-25-2007, 12:58 PM
Digital will improve the qualty of the image but not the contrast. The Hanns-G has a 700:1 contrast ratio, pretty much the standard for regular LCD's. Some of the "professional" level ones exceed a 2000:1 ratio. Look to see if the Hanns-G you have lets you change the color temp of the display.

Frosty
03-25-2007, 01:06 PM
trau,

It only lets me adjust the color to "warm", "cool" or"user defined". I don't understand what those mean because this lcd didn't come with a manual.

And my samsgun lcd was nothing special... ithad the normal ratio... but it was STILL much much better quality than this. All the colors on it were so vibrant and the text was very sharp and crystal clear and pitch black. Same on my dell.... almost as good as the samsung was. VERY close... both were great quality.

BUT this Hanns-G lcd... is washed out looking and text text is faint. it is starting to irritate my eyes looking at it. But so this monitor is analog and NOT digital right? I always have problem figuring out if the lcd is monitor or digital because sometimes they don't clearly note this unless I'm overlooking it.

But I am going to try out the dell digital lcd and the samsung... I KNOW that I will like either of those so I'm going to try to get them instead.... because I'm not happy with this hanns-G lcd.

And I don't like my new keyboard that I just bought either! You have to push down really hard on the buttons or it won't type the letter... have to return it. I keep tapping the buttons sometimes twice because it wouldn't type the letter on first tap. Not a good keyboard. Why can't I ever buy somethingthe first time and have it be decent. It's always like this when i buythings.

CArmstrong
03-25-2007, 01:39 PM
Sorry you're not happy with the Hanns-G... mine is vibrant and very clear :(

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if it's an analog monitor it will have the standard VGA output but if it's digital it will have the digital connector with many more prongs (I forget what it's called), right?

Frosty
03-25-2007, 01:47 PM
Chris Armstrong,

It's not bad quality but after using the samsung and dell lcd I think I've become spoiled because they really do have a better display of images and text. If I had only used HP or Hanns-G lcd's before and had never tried samsung or dell lcd's then I too would think that my current Hanns-G was a good clear lcd not realizing how much better the samsung or dell displays. Have you ever tried samsung or the higher quality dell digital lcd's before?

Because my samsung was just very vibrant and super sharp and clear... but this Hanns-G is just a tad washed out looking. I don't know how else to describe it but it definitely is.

So far I tried HP, Hanns-G, dell and sumsung as well as a few others. I was very happy with the dell and samsung quality... HP being the WORST!!... with Hanns-G being ok but not the best =)

I'm going to try the dell and samsung and pick one of those and get on with it...

Frosty, we have an older Dell LCD from about 4 years ago upstairs but it's hard to compare. Maybe one day I'll set them up side-by-side.

Frosty

Chris,

Don't compare it to the 4 yr old dell lcd... because I tried dell lcd's a few years ago and hated them and returned it. But it seems that they improved them somehow because when I tried a new one last week it was VERY nice. There was a BIG difference between my dell lcd and sumsung a few years ago... but not now.

I swear I'm not imagining it =)

I've noticed a big difference between these different lcd's... right after I plug them in at look at it... it hits me in the face. When I unplugged this hanns-g and plugged in the new dell... the new dell was just better.

But I have to give this 17" dell to my mother... so I have to get my own. Plus I wanted a 19" lcd :)

dell monitors are made by samsung. THERE THE BEST U CAN GET.

Ive had 5 different widescreen lcd monitors made by dell and I cant complain about one of them, I only upgrade to bigger better models.

frosty is right, they USE TO BE crapy before, same with there computers.

Dell has pretty much the best computers u can get because they teamed up with the best companys.

The old dell monitors suck though

Frosty

Aha! You see, I KNEW I wasn't imagining it. Yes, I remember like it was yesterday when I tried dell lcd's a few years ago I returned them immediately because they were terrible. Just as bad as the new HP I just tried.

But they improved them... I was very happy with the quality of their new dell lcd's. My only problem is that they don't have built in speakers. I know that I can attach the sound bar to the bottom of it which I would be happy with. But years ago when I attached the sound bar to the dell lcd the sound bar was terrible. It was buzzing constantly like a bee.

Antec1,
Are the sound bars still bad like that or are they good now?

Antec1
03-25-2007, 02:16 PM
i dont know, i use real speakers. I like high quailty. I have my computer hooked up to my stereo reciever for sound

i used my speaks in my old viewsonic monitor when i was at a lan. I found it sounded horrible. Viewsonic is the worst, my dvi didnt even work, I called them and they wouldnt replace my monitor unless i paid like a 500 deposit

Frosty
03-25-2007, 02:31 PM
I see, I just ordered a sound bar from dell. I want to test out the sound bar first. And then if it's ok then I'll go ahead and buy the new dell digital 19" lcd and attach the sound bar to it =)

I just hate external speakers cluttering up my desk. I know built in speakers aren't the very best but I don't need high quality sound. But I still don't want my speakers to be buzzing nonstop like some bee. This is what the sound bar from dell was doing years ago. I had to return it. I hope these days their sound bars are decent.

If not, then I'll get that samsung lcd with the built in speakers.

EDIT: I have a dumb question, if I get the sound bar... can I always leave it turned on? I mean I don't have to shut them off when I turn my computer off, right? It's not bad to leave that speaker powered on, right?

But I can't tell if this lcd is digital or analog? Can you guys tell which one it is???

Analog connection on both monitor and video card should be "blue" and digital connection is "white".

I'm curious to finally see if this digital really is all that much better than analog.

did you change the resolution? all lcds have a native resolution that they are designed to run at and none of these new panels you are buying are going to use the same res as your old sammy

Frosty
03-26-2007, 03:35 PM
westcan,

I always use 1024X768 I absolutley cnanot stand any higher res than that even if it is a 19" lcd.

I did change it to the higer res it recommend however but that did not make any difference at all. The HP lcd was still very VERY bad quality and the Hanns_G was still not the best.

I'm going to buy a 19" dell digital lcd... try one one out. Positive that will be great quality.

tcstatic
03-27-2007, 08:46 AM
Your LCD will always look better with a digital connection and at native resolution which is 1280 x 1024 for DELL 19" and a lot of other 19" LCDs.

I just switched my LCD to 1024 x 768 and it looked completely horrible....maybe that is your problem?

Frosty
03-27-2007, 10:50 AM
No I just changed the Hanns-G to much higher resolutions it still did not look good.

Plus at any res higher than 1024X768 my mouse arrow start to move unbearably slow. It is unbearable.... I cannot use such a slow moving mouse arrow. You'll find my other thread I just opened about this at WHT in this computer section for more details. I don't want to re-type it here.

Even at 1024X768 my mouse arrow is just way too slow. It's not slow for most people's standards but for me it is.

The larger the monitor AND the higher the res it makes your mouse arrow move slower.

I MUST fix this... if I can't then I'm going to have tog et rid of my 19" monitor and go back to 17" it's bothering me that bad! :(

If you view my other thread... do you have any idea for any third party solutions to fix this?

Considering your previous LCD lasted for 3 years should have gave you an idea that it is not that a good brand. But I still do believe that Samsung is still the best in LCD monitors. Couldn't you return it and have it replaced? :)
