I like contacting hosts directly to determine how friendly they are, how well they support their service, etc. Can someone please post any AIM screen names for webhosting companies in this thread? Thanks.

Hosts may post their AOL IM screen names as requested, but I think members should not post other AOL IM screen names that they know, as some poeple don't want to be contacted. In other words, feel free to post your own only.

Lots of companies have them. Some only give them out to certain people and some give them out to everyone. Also, many around here place the IM screen name in their signature.

Although many hosts reply within 30 minutes to email, I have seen at least 3 that have never replied. I want to know that help is there IMMEDIATELY, and AIM (or ICQ, MSN, etc) is the best way to determine this - unless the host has java support.

I think using AIM, MSN, Yahoo etc for customer relations, tech support, sales etc is not a bad idea BUT many users don't have IM software on the computer they are using. This problem has been solved by using a chat interface that any user can use without downloading AIM or other IM software. We use PHP Live Support and have found that it works very well. Once you grow and have a few techs answering customer chats you'll find that you wil not be able to use AIM or other IM software. You can't transfer chats etc etc.

IM's are fine to use as a support tool, but of course they cannot be the only tool you use. We have several techs and we don't have much problem at all transferring chats with IM's.

I've never gotten used to those PHP Live Support kind of things.

To each his/her own I guess.

Ims are a great communication tool for intra company communication. Every person on our staff is running Trillian so that we can all communicate on one platform.

You can talk to me, the owner of ServerSonic, at SSonicHelp on AIM, ICQ # 16865386. :) I have AIM+ Installed which logs all the chats so I can easily look back to see the history on a user if I need to.
