View Full Version : Gearhost down for a bit
deepshine 07-07-2002, 12:24 PM I've been with Gearhost since the beginning of the year and have had lukewarm feelings about them. For the most part, they've been great, but there seem to be intermittent and unexplained outages when my sites are not visible, nor am I able to receive email. For example this morning, I checked my site randomly....down. When I went to their Network Status page, I found this explanantion:
At approximately 3:19PM MDT (on 7-6-02) Thetis automatically shut down with a Critical Alarm Failure Error, causing all services on Thetis to halt until repair. The error consumes two main critical parts for the power that is fed into the server. Our current ETA for the server repair (parts replacement) is Tuesday afternoon. This long ETA is a result of the part being shipped from Compaq but Compaq is not able to send the part today due the 4th of July weekend, as a result their normal response is delayed. Under normal conditions this would of been repaired within 24 hours by Compaq.
I can understand hardware failure, but what I cannot understand is the lack of a Disaster Recovery plan to prepare for such an event. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person affected by this. I guess the "99.9% uptime" is rapidly falling. I'm sure that they will be doing all they can to restore Thetis, but in the meantime, should I be looking for reimbursement for lost time (It only seems fair....), or look for a more solid host?
Just venting, thanks for listening....

Tranz 07-07-2002, 12:46 PM I have several clients site with GH. If I have to refund any money that I myself have already spent then I am going to be pissed!
Kevin2001 07-09-2002, 07:54 AM I have an account with gearhost and I'm affected!
I got an email from them on Saturday stating the problem. I haven't used them for any of my clients yet and after this weekend I will not... I have enough to worry about, I don't want the hassle with having to explaining this to a client..
spiceman 07-09-2002, 01:52 PM my site has been down since Sunday.. what the #$#$#$#.... shouldn't hosting companies have spare parts or something...
someone tell us what they would've done to avoid this mess...
BTW...i am still offline
okihost 07-09-2002, 02:32 PM Why would compaq not be able to ship on the 4th everywhere else was. The only things basically closed that I noticed atleast?
deepshine 07-09-2002, 03:41 PM Well, at least Gearhost stuck (loosely) to their word as my sites are back up today. I still don't understand this...
Maybe they'll send out a communication about partial refunds...
Look, I'm holding my breath!

landover80 07-09-2002, 03:47 PM Basically the spare part was not a normal part within the server; it consisted of two main parts that supply power to the server, not just the power supply itself. Thus Compaq needed to ship the part but their main spare parts warehouses were closed, thus the delay. On the same token you can't just move the data either, that would even be a bigger mess with configurations, restores, etc.; unless the server had a direct data crash it wouldn't be smart to restore (long term).
This stuff happens I mean does your car delership really carry a spare transmission gear doo-hikky for your flux-converter ;) or do they have to ship it? Now if this was a common component issue that's another story...
Regardless, I am glad that the stated ETA was met, and thetis is now back online.
Have a great day

Geez stuff happens and at least they were professional about it. Some people I can not stand and its people who complain about every little thing. Go and try to find a perfect webhost, because once you find it, drop me a line.
Thanks.

I am hosted by Gearhost also, and they have been great since day one. Tech support is always pretty fast to get back to me, I have had 99.9% uptime, loading speeds are always good, etc. They offer good plans for fair prices, though the plans were different and a bit cheaper when I signed up than they are now. A few random outages here and there, but they were about 5-10 minutes at most. Also had a problem with my e-mail at first, but it was fixed quickly. I must not be on Thetis, I haven't experienced any down time at all for a while now.
deepshine 07-10-2002, 12:33 PM If you noticed in my original post, I said that Gearhost was great (most of the time). I understand about the parts and am satisfied that they stuck with the ETA. Forgive me if I was wrong for posting a non-PC opinion, but I've always thought this was an open forum so that folks could get the good and bad about a particular host so that everyone stays well informed.
Just my last 2 cents.
