View Full Version : is switching to godaddy a good path?
johncc 03-23-2007, 12:36 AM coming from registerfly mess, I managed to transfer out all my domains. it was a stressful event and had wasted alot of my time.
The reason I used registefly previously was it was cheap-I had quite a number of domains, and I had domains with them for the past 5 years, there are problems here and there but not as serious as this time round, that's why i had to switch out.
Though my domains are now at godaddy, i wonder if it's good to stay there, fearing of recurring nightmare. what do you view godaddy as, stable? difficult to transfer domain later?
4solutions 03-23-2007, 01:39 AM Well... congratulations on successfully transferring out of RF!
CMA... "It is rumored that" GoDaddy has a history of having a very hard-nose, black-white view of some matters. Especially if someone should "mistakenly" or vindictively accuse you of being a spammer. Or, if someone claims that you have stolen their domain or are violating their trademark/copyright...
GoDaddy will simply take your domain and YOU have to fight for it back.
Anyway, you are stuck with "Uncle Bob" for at least 60 days since you just transferred in.
Look, don't get me wrong, I have some domains at GoDaddy... but if you send out any kind of newsletter or regular email communication with your clients, and should one of those clients not remember who you are, if they send a spam alert email to GoDaddy - you're screwed. Your domain will be locked away by GoDaddy and good luck getting it back.
I actually respect most of Bob Parson's views on his blog... but, "it is rumored" that his policies related to free speech are that he gets to say whatever he wants to and you get to say whatever he wants you to.
Get it?
GoDaddy are definitely stable and have a good CP for lots of domains. They are well documented as being heavy-handed in implementing their sometimes onerous ToS. To wit...
They will charge you if anyone complains about an incomplete whois, even if the claim is unfounded. If you don't respond (they only send an email to the registrant in the whois), they'll pull your domain and sell it to anyone backordering the domain.
They will pull your domain without sufficient notification if someone complains about scamming or phishing, even if it's unfounded. They'll then charge you for restoration and/or to take your registration elsewhere.
They will pull your domain for trademark complaints, even if it's unfounded, and even without proper judicial judgements.
Someone quoted their legal counsel on this forum as saying "they reserve their right to pull your domain for whatever reason" (maybe paraphrased). And I believe it.
If you can stay under that radar (millions do), then they're an OK registrar. I do, but I wouldn't ever consider their hosting.
They are notorious for locking your domain for 60 days ANY time you change ANYTHING in the REGISTRANT Contact Info (but of course you can still push to another GoDaddy account).
For these reasons, I wouldn't recommend keeping any economically critical domains at GoDaddy.
Mxhub 03-23-2007, 02:10 AM godaddy is good. However, i still prefer enom.
mrzippy 03-23-2007, 10:23 AM I would never trust any of my domains to Godaddy.
If you have ever read their TOS, then you will agree. Godaddy is well-known for being very heavy-handed with domain suspension, even if someone submits a false claim that your website was spamming.
In other words, all your competitor needs to do is tell godaddy you are sending spam (no proof required), and there is a good chance godaddy will suspend your domain name. Then you must pay them money to re-activate, and this process can drag on for weeks...
wbengal 03-23-2007, 10:57 AM I personally avoid GoDaddy at all costs!
nameslave 03-23-2007, 10:57 AM what do you view godaddy as, stable? difficult to transfer domain later?
I had some REALLY BAD experience with GoDaddy, but then they are now the largest registrar on earth (with more than 15 million domains; 2nd being Network Solutions with less than 8 millions). So if anything happens, there will be millions other people going down with you (but remember Enron?)
Having said that, GoDaddy is NOT particularly transfer (away) unfriendly. I just transferred 1 out in less than an hour (from initiating at the winning registrar).
Apart from their ToS and heavy-handedness, I actually like GoDaddy ;)
