Hey all,

I am an experienced Linux sys admin, web developer and entrepreneur. I have been selling in some very niche markets thus far with my hosting biz over the past 8 years.

I am considering the VPS sector as a new "avenue" for my company since I have the ability to install and maintain the VPS ve's. It seems like there are tons of VPS hosting providers out there though.

Am I too late?

If I can create a good brand with competitive pricing and top-notch support is that enough?

I know I have read many posts here at WHT saying I should not count on selling to other WHT'ers (although to be honest, all of my server related purchases were based on WHT posts), so I am initially thinking of going after Small-Medium Businesses who may have an old server in a closet somewhere running all of their IT infrastructure. Also upgrading my current customers from shared accounts.

Am I being too naive?

Yes, you are too late and too naive. Here is tons of VDS/VPS providers around and this niche is pretty saturated...

If you were to do a more 'on demand' vps where a customer paid for cpu usage then you would find that niche to be pretty open.

Is it easy and setup out of the box? No

Just my idea if I were thinking about getting into the VPS market now.

You're never too late and the market is never too saturated. If you can offer something that others can't, by all means go for it. However, if you're going to be offering the same cookie-cutter VPS plans that other hosts are, it'll be more difficult and you will have to depend on your reputation for great service and support (assuming that's true) to carry you through.

Good luck!

You answered your own question.

The "general VPS market" is very saturated. However, if you have your own niche market, then you will be fine.

BTW.... "superior support" is not a niche. I see so many people who come here and think their new hosting service is going to make millions because they "will offer better support and service" then the 50 million other companies who already offer "supperior support and service".
