eddy2099 07-07-2002, 01:37 AM Nice offer but I do not seems to be able to get to any of the pages.
InterServ-JB 07-07-2002, 02:22 AM Yes. Same thing here. What is going on?
C:\>ping XXXXX

Ping statistics for XXXXX:

zdwebhosting 07-07-2002, 04:04 AM i noticed it earlier too they were down , now backup
wierd no redundancy?
SrvOutsource 07-07-2002, 06:23 AM zdwebhosting,
We do have redundancy, our primary is CogentCo/Epik, and the backup is Level 3.
Which I wish InterServ-JB did not post the IP, now our firewall is getting hit.
The CogentCo/epik and Level 3 networks are isolated, running on different equipment so if one fails, the other will not be affected.
We are doing some upgrades this morning (AV, stats program, etc.), and will be doing some more in a few hours, so the server will be intermittent this morning when we are rebooting and/or stopping services. :(
Your welcome to do a traceroute from http://www.traceroute.org/#USA, but the last step will timeout.
If you would like an IP to PING or traceroute please e-mail me at dkeefer@serveroutsource.net or via PM.
The Laughing Cow 07-07-2002, 07:16 AM Do you have a demo of this HP control panel?

Epik is a backup to Cogent in a lot of places but it's an agreement Cogent has made themselves on THEIR side.... so if Cogent is having a problem at the entry point to the DC then it's still down.. Epik doesn't do anything at that point. Is that how your Cogent/Epik connection works?
Are the IP's that are assigned for these machines direct from Cogent?
SrvOutsource 07-07-2002, 10:57 AM Terry,
HP does not have a demo available at the current time. :(
They do have some guides at: http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/get_doc.pl?SNI=hpwebhosti31021&LC=information_storage&Tfile=lpn10172

SrvOutsource 07-07-2002, 11:08 AM Robin,
No, that is not how our network is setup.
I have never heard anything about CogentCo having any deal with Epik.
This was not a network failure, if you read the post I made earlier.
All of our new IP's are direct from CogentCo, that are located on that network.

Cogent does agreements with other providers... I just usually see Epik in the mix with Cogent and was curious.
If the IP's are Cogent IP's how can the server start using another provider if Cogent goes down?
InterServ-JB 07-07-2002, 12:32 PM Sorry about the IP issue. You know, its not very hard to get that information :)
SrvOutsource 07-07-2002, 12:39 PM InterServ-JB,
I know ot is pretty easy, but for some reason every time we posted an IP for people to do traces to, it always gets hit. :(
InterServ-JB 07-07-2002, 12:39 PM Again, I do apologize.
SrvOutsource 07-07-2002, 12:40 PM rastoma,
I'm not the network person.
But they are ARIN issued blocks that are being used, and a yearly fee is paid for them.
David

SrvOutsource 07-07-2002, 07:16 PM Thanks. :)

Maybe it is a problem that you typed in XXXXX ?

BGP routing does that, if they use BGP ?!?
SrvOutsource 07-08-2002, 05:24 AM Greg,
Our network person does have BGP setup.
It goes in this order:
CogentCo -> Epik -> Level 3
From what he tells me Level 3 has the lowest priority, and is there as a "just in case"
Also with PING's its hard to tell where the problem is.
Personally I like traceroutes. :)
They always show exactly where it is timing out.
David
BurtonHost 07-08-2002, 05:33 AM Trace routes are not always affective as a bottle neck could be further up the link but the traceroute shows it down.. at least this is what I have been told.
The most effective way i've been told is to get the traceroute and ping each hop individually - sometimes gives you more reliable info on where the problem is.

But to use BGP you have to your own assigned IP block (or the data center has to have their own IP block to assign to it's users).... if you have IP's assigned from Cogent... not internal.. but Cogent only IP's directly from Cogent, then other providers in a BGP network cannot broadcast to that IP.
If they have figured out a way to get level3 to work on a Cogent IP # I'd like to know how it's done :)

The best way to find the issue is to tracert FROM the box outward... but in this case we can't do that :)
Ratsoma,
You can do that if you have your own ASN, and get Cogent to announce your IP blocks with Cogent on that ASN. If your Cogent connection goes down, or if there is a better route for those IP's, it will go over the other connections. I'm not a BGP expert, but it can be done, and is not anything special - most people do something like this.

Yes this is correct.. I didn't go into details because most DC's own their blocks of IP's.
dirkstaes 04-09-2004, 10:17 PM server is still down?
