$0.99 domains?

REALLY?

I doubt that any registrar would take a $5.25 loss. There has to be a catch in the fine print.

I smell a scam. Any registrar that offers a domain for less than $6.25 needs to be looked at. I'm not saying that all registrars that sell for lower are scam artists, I'm just saying buyer beware.

not all are scams.. they just have restrictions. Mabye you have to pay extra for creating your own nameservers. They also might want to sell at a lower price and hope you pay FULL price on renewal time. Also, they might have a deal where you get yr 1 for 0.99 and 2nd year for full price. Meaning you have to register for 2 yrs..

there's always some kinda catch or expectation behind it ;)

Like a year or two ago I got one of my domains from yahoo for like $2 and no contract and no other stuff with it so I say it is possible. Still always double check on that kind of stuff.

I found this:

http://www.strato.de/webhosting/domains/

first year free, from the second year Euro 0.19. Is that possible?

I gave them a call and I was told I could transfer that domain to any other Host company around the world.

Is that serious? Can I trust in it. Strato is one of the biggest registrar companies and you get even one .eu free.

thanks for your comments.

What is the purpose for the $6.25 limit ? Do you think its profitability or some other reason?

What is the purpose for the $6.25 limit ? Do you think its profitability or some other reason? That is approximately the actual cost of a .com domain name. A domain register HAS to pay $6.00 to the registry (Verisign) and $.25 to ICANN for every .com domain name registered.

So, excluding marketing, labor, taxes, utilities, rent and other overhead expenses, (which would make the figure higher) anyone selling a .com domain name below $6.25 is absolutely, positively, losing money. So then the questions become:

"What's their game?"

"Why are they doing this promotion?"

"How do they intend to make money in the end?"

"Am I locked into hosting with them forever?"

"Will I really be the true legal owner of the domain name at the discounted price?"

"Can I transfer away if I don't like the deal?"

"Is there a transfer fee out of some kind?"

"What are the restrictions?"

Often hosting companies will offer free domains if you host with them. But, if you read the fine print, you find that the hosting company (and NOT you) ends up owning your domain name. That is how they control you.

The absolutely BEST and SAFEST policy is to register your domain at a reputable registrar and then host your website with a DIFFERENT provider. This is because you will have the best chance of being able to transfer your domain name away should trouble with either the registrar or hosting company happen.

To clear everyone's doubts:

- We offer $0.99 domain name as part of our marketing activities.
- There is no domain registrar in this world offering a .com for $0.99. We use eNom as our registrar and our cost is $6.95 to have every domain name registered. That means, we have to pay (subsidies our client) from our own pocket $6+ for every domains client registered during this Domain Crazy Sale!
- Our clients have full control over their domain name and the legal owner.
- Our clients can transfer the domain name to any registrar after the 60 days registrar locked period.
- There isn't a need to purchase hosting plan in order to get the $0.99 domain during this sale.
- As stated clearly on our web site, 2nd year renewal will be on normal price.
- There is no "Transfer Out" fee.

this is not scam or what's over. We have thousands of domains registered during this domain crazy sale! I will say this crazy sale is a success. Many sites and blogs are talking about our domain crazy sales and I think the money we spent on subsidized the domain registration fee is worth in exchange for publicity and awareness.

We might offer this domain crazy sale again, but don't ask me when. :D
