View Full Version : Since when did dedicated servers get this cheap....
Zachary McClung 03-12-2007, 02:30 PM Hello:
I received a sales request this morning for the following.
Dual Opteron Dual Core System
16 GB of Ram
2 x 73 GB SCSI on RAID 1
100 MBPS Bandwidth
Monthly: $300.00
Setup: $0.00
When did server parts and bandwidth get this cheap?
Jay Suds 03-12-2007, 02:44 PM We have received the same request from the same individual multiple times.
cywkevin 03-12-2007, 02:46 PM If I remember correctly, rampant price drops took effect after the eugenics wars.
Zachary McClung 03-12-2007, 02:57 PM Hello:
When I received this quote request I am thinking $3,000.00 $4,000.00 in equipment, $3,200.00/month in bandwidth, etc. Atleast somone is in fantasy land. I wish I could get this server for $300.00/month.
keywolf 03-12-2007, 03:45 PM Its that cheap beacuse hardware is getting cheaper and cheaper.
Look how much an Apple II cost 10 years ago and look how much it costs now. This is just an example
All hardware gets cheaper.
Zachary McClung 03-12-2007, 03:48 PM Hardware is getting cheaper but not that cheap. And, bandwidth for 100 MBPS unless shared is not that cheap or even close to be ing that cheap. With cheap cheap bandwidht for 100 MBPS your still looking $900.00/month. Please, people stop dreaming.
keywolf 03-12-2007, 04:10 PM Whats the difference between a 100mbit shared and 100mbit dedicated?
Zachary McClung 03-12-2007, 04:14 PM The different between a 100 MBPS shared and a 100 MBPS dedicated is the fact that 100 MBPS of bandwidth is dedicated to 1 machine. On a shared bandwith connection 8 - 12 machines share the 100 MBPS on a locked network.
We received a similar quote request.
There's no way to accomplish that price in today's marketplace while staying in business.
AH-Tina 03-12-2007, 05:43 PM Was this guy named "Hanly", by any chance?
We actually had that exact server for sale recently (closeout price) and were in talks with him...until we sold out. We certainly weren't giving 100 mbps dedicated though. I wonder if he is now looking around for the same deal.

01globalnet 03-12-2007, 08:05 PM Yes, I remember the thread - he is definetely not going to find again this bargain!
Zachary McClung 03-12-2007, 09:48 PM Hello:
The guy gave me a nice laugh. I can see maybe doing the server for $500.00/mo. on 2,000 GB. But 100 MBPS. It gave me a good laugh with ~ $1,600.00 in memory in the system.

Yup. That's him. He asked us for a quote on 2/14 and then again on 3/10. Cost on the hardware alone was about $5000.
TomorrowHosting 03-12-2007, 10:34 PM EDIT: Meh didn't read the topic entirely.

Clearly we all run charities!
kris1351 03-13-2007, 12:56 AM Even cheap Cogent bandwidth costs $10/Mbps these days. You CAN'T offer even a low end server for that price.

Yes you can. Don't be silly. ;)

VINAX 03-13-2007, 02:01 PM We also recieved 2 times quote from this guys with that specs system, plus Fully Managed. I don't know why he can request that powerful server with impossible monthly price ( Budget $ 300 per month with "0" set up cost ). Maybe he meant 100Mbps Cogent shared port? If so, it's still not possible to accept his request!...haha...
AH-Tina 03-13-2007, 02:03 PM The specs are identical to the server we had @ $359 a month - but with a 100 mpbs port. I think that's probably what he meant.
(no, we don't have this server for sale anymore)
