Hi, i am getting an error message when i shutdown a redhat linux 7.3 box

Everything goes ok, then it comes up with a message say 'bad eip' and the system doesn't switch off.

The system will restart fine, with no errors, its just when it is shutting down.

I know there is not much info about the error, maybe it will be in an error log somewhere?

Ok thanx
Matt.

I asume you tried google to search for results and read about it?

I get the same thing on my mandrake box.

It could be drivers, kernel, corrupt ram, who knows.

Apparently by bad EIP it means the next instruction is bad (low level fetch - execute)

I think it may be that it cannot turn off the power in an ATX system. I know because with windows on the system, you had to press the power button to switch off when it said "it is now safe to shut down" and I think this may be the case even when linux is on the box.

i suppose that would make sense as it doesn't show any errors when i just reboot. Thanx for your help, Matt
