View Full Version : fast servers ?
clocker1996 07-04-2002, 04:48 PM http://web.fastservers.net/dedicated/standard.shtml
Has anyone tried these guys? The middle one looks really good, can anyone give some feedback?
thanks
I am also thinking about getting a dedicated with fastservers and they look like a good choice.
I was talking to Aaron Phillips (from fastservers) yesterday and he sounds like a nice guy. I have used their parent company powersurge.net in the past and they were top notch.
They also use he.net which is a high-quality dc with amazing speeds and uptime.
If you sign-up tell me how it goes...:)
choon 07-04-2002, 05:08 PM Hi,
Their offers are good but I don't like their bandwidth calculation show at this page http://web.fastservers.net/dedicated/bandwidth.shtml
Anyone try them before?
Thanks :)
Regards,
Choon
maxbear 07-04-2002, 05:21 PM Me too. It seems a kind of complicated. And they are using 95th method to caluate bandwidth.
But their price for Windows server is really amazing. Much lower than most of the companines.
Anyone know which bandwidth provider(s) they are using?

They use he.net. HE.net owns their own OC-3 nation wide backbone so they don't actually have leased lines from other providers. What they do is they have POPs at various peering points such as MAE-East and West, PAIX and a few more and peer with other networks and those points. A couple of their peers that come to mind are AOL, XO, Verio, Level3, MFN, Williams and various others.
More info: http://he.net/about_nw.html
RackMy.com 07-04-2002, 05:27 PM Looks like HE.net
MatrixRS 07-04-2002, 06:22 PM We have a server out there with them.. It is he.net been good so far.
k6cheung 07-04-2002, 06:58 PM I am currently using FDCServer.net ,
I am running my own server application on the server and speed(bandwidth) is important. how is ping time/loss on your server with fastservers.net ?
k6cheung 07-05-2002, 07:03 AM Is fastservers.net a reseller for Powersurge.net ?
They're using their name servers..
hm.....

I don't think they are resellers, PS dosn't even offer dedicateds. From what I know FS is powersurge's parent company...
maxbear 07-05-2002, 07:41 AM But their price is a bite strange. Even Cogent sells 100mb/s for $3000. That means, it's $30 per mb/s.
And the price for fast server is $75 for 3mb/s, that means it's $25 per mb/s. Why it's even lower than Cogent? Are they buy bulk from Cogent and they give them a discount, so they can offer such a low price?
Just want to clear things out and don't want to have problem later.
Where do you see $75 for 3mb/s?
I'm seeing that it's $900 (if you prepay) at:
http://web.fastservers.net/dedicated/bandwidth.shtml
k6cheung 07-05-2002, 12:03 PM where did you see $75 for 3mb/s ?
Isn't it $99 for a month and you get 3mb/s which provide you up to 300GIG for a month ?
not sure about this one but I probably won't be use over that rate, but I can tell you, I am using FDC server now and I am getting 8bytes/sec Upstream rate,......sucks huh ?
maxbear 07-05-2002, 01:01 PM Sorry guys :stickout I was talking about hostmania.net. I post it in a wrong thread. Really sorry about that. :D
k6cheung 07-06-2002, 06:55 PM Anyone using Fastserver.net now ?
Are they any good ? reliable ?
KC.
Although I'd love to go with FastServers, their startup cost is really high. For their base server with CPanel, you have to pay for the first full month ($136), the prorated cost for the current month ($110), and the setup fee ($249).
Although this would be bearable if I was already a satisfied customer, $500 is a lot to shell out just to see if everything is as good as advertised.
PowerSurge 07-11-2002, 03:23 PM Greetings:
To answer a few of your questions.....
1.) FastServers.Net is going to start offering 200GB of Transfer per month (Actual) or 1 Mb/sec, we have had a tremendous amount of requests for this and are going to make it happen.
2.) FastServers.Net is removing the pro-rated billing all together, a new and updated ordering system is just around the corner.
3.) FastServers.Net has implemented a 30 Day money back guarantee, in the past 2 years we have never issued a refund for a dedicated server/co-location service.
I am personally available to answer any questions that remain and look forward to doing business with the members of WHT.
Aaron,
That sounds great! When do you expect the changes to take place? (especially #1)
Thanks!
PowerSurge 07-11-2002, 03:40 PM That change has been approved internally and I have the ability to do this on contracts, the changes should show up on the website this weekend.
inquisitive 07-11-2002, 03:51 PM When is your winpanel expected to come out ?
Can we have a demo for that. Which Mia
I tried to have a live chat with someone at your site but nobody came online.
Can you give me your AIM or ICQ ?
PowerSurge 07-11-2002, 03:54 PM Greetings:
WinPANEL is a couple months from happening, hopefully we can stay away. My profile has ICQ and AIM listed please feel free to contact me.

Aaron Phillips
inquisitive 07-11-2002, 04:00 PM Can I have Ensim Webappliance 3.0 installed for win server ?
Do you support it ?
Also I could not find the list of any other softwares that comes pre installed with the windows server ? Can you jot down all the softwares along with the add on options like firewall, antivirus etc
ScottD 07-11-2002, 04:01 PM FastServers.Net has implemented a 30 Day money back guarantee, in the past 2 years we have never issued a refund for a dedicated server/co-location service. So you stand by your quality, it's good to see someone who has a vested interest in retaining their customers!

NICE, NICE and NICE!! looks like good things are happening over at fastservers, all I can say is wow...:)
btw: what about colocation? are you going to update the bandwidth to reflect the new non-95th percentile changes?

Ensim is certainly an option you can choose to implement though honestly on our network it has not been something we have supported, period. It's demand has lessened greatly and I would doubt we would sign a support contract for that product, mostly due to lack of consistent usage.
On our win2k machines, BlackIce Defender and Norton Antivirus are the most popular software solutions our windows clients are using at this time. You can do some things with IDS/port filtering/lockouts & auditing by default with Windows 2000 server of course, but beyond that those pieces of software are definitely the most widely used at this time.
As far as our win2k panel, time is the only thing standing in the way of completion.
:stickout
Definitely nothing earth shattering, but we're trying to produce a decent windows panel with a wide variety of bells & whistles that actually function and aren't confusing. We have a few demo accounts floating around behind the scenes, though we don't offer a full demo of "winpanel" yet. I would imagine as the summer draws to a close it may be close to 95% complete.
Just an estimate!
Let us know if you have further questions.
ScottD 07-11-2002, 04:32 PM Quick question, you offer one month free for signing up for 3 months. Would you quadruple that for 12 months? So sign up for 12 months, get 4 free? Or is the 3 + 1 deal just for the initial signup?

No, if this is something you want installed you would need to purchase it directly from Ensim.

The Windows 2000 server comes with the OS only, at this time we are not getting into providing, renting, or directly supporting the many applications that are available for Windows 2000.

The deal is only for initial signups.
edude 07-11-2002, 04:38 PM I'm going to try fastservers out - i'll give you guys a full report. The main reason is because they use he.net.
k6cheung 07-11-2002, 05:15 PM Hello Guys,
I got my server now (fastservers.net) and I am too busy to set it up. Here is a Quick Summary :
1. They're JUST TOO good.....respond ticket in 15 minutes even though it's like 3:00 AM
2. Their network is FAST, people are friendly and professional, setup is quick.
3. MUCH BETTER than FDC,
KC.
BiGWill 07-11-2002, 06:11 PM nice k6cheung!
keep it coming :)

If pushing 1Mb/sec a month will net over 300GB, how come we'll only get 200GB metered?
fastservers_net 07-11-2002, 11:08 PM [QUOTE]Originally posted by mushrew

A sustained 1 Mb/sec per month will push 300GB in traffic, that is a correct statement, but the bandwidth offering on FastServers.Net is not "sustained" bandwidth, it is measured using 95th percentile the exact same we are charged for it by our provider.
The 200GB is what we feel is an adequate amount of bandwidth to give in terms of a trade off for not using 95th percentile. Both bandwidth measurements have some pros and cons and it is the goal of FastServers.Net to provide you the customer with a number of choices to make your purchase decision one you are happy with.
Out of the 100's of e-mails and the various posts we have digested in the past week, we have taken suggestions from people looking at our services and did the absolute best to meet the demand of the masses. While it is not possible to satisfy every single request, our team of engineers, sales reps, and management team are certainly trying to take every suggestion and review it to see if it can not be molded into our current product offering.
Please keep the suggestions rolling in, believe it or not they do get read, forwarded discussed, pondered upon, discussed, technically planned, and in the end a lot of them get implemented as part of the service offering.
Regards,
The Entire FastServers.Net Team
dan64 07-12-2002, 02:28 AM I signed up with fastservers over a week ago. I have had nothing but the best experience with the whole team. Aaron and Trevor have been a great help.
My box was set up very quickly, they emailed me throughout the day keeping me updated on the progress of the box. I always knew what was going on.
They are by far the most friendliest people that I have meet. They defiantly have a customer first attitude. Their phone support is great and they answer 24 hrs a day, and have never had a ticket open for more than 10 mins.
As far as the data center everything seems great. Have had no down time, and the speeds are much faster than any of the last 3 provides I have been with.
I tried 3 other hosts before signing up for fasterservers. I spent $500 for the first month and set up with each one. So you can understand my hesitation to try some one new.
I have found my home on the web and am already making plans to get a full rack.
mushrew 07-12-2002, 02:43 AM According to the 95th percentile rule, the top 5 percent gets chopped off. So isn't one allowed to actualy go over 1Mbit, with the excess being chopped off so they end up with 1Mbit? Thus it would be 300GB+ sustained.
josh@fs 07-17-2002, 07:31 PM mushrew,
The very basis of what you are trying to convince us into letting you have is why we use the 95th percentile. We let 5% of the readings be as high as they are and are not counted, period. After the top 5% are discarded we charge you based on what the next highest reading is. plain and simple.
Don't want to use 95th percentile? No problem...we can calculate your bandwidth in GBs/mo. if you wish. All you have to do is sign up and we'll prove our worth to you and the board!
Don't hesitate to call us if you have any questions before signing up for your choice of servers on the site. If there isn't one there you like then call us and we'll configure you one to your exact needs...for instance we can do multiple servers, fail-over systems, load balancing, firewalling, complete admin services, etc.
Peace! :D
Josh
josh@fs 07-17-2002, 07:44 PM dan64,
It posts like yours that make it all worth while. Hopefully we can get everyone on this forum feeling the same way you do. Your comments are what we strive to achieve every minute of every hour in every day.
The FastServers team wants you to know that anytime you want to expand we are here for you and your staff 24/7/365. And if you want to start discussing full rack capabilities you know the number!
I equate having a good home for my server to the feeling I got when I bought my first house. I mean in alot of ways its the same, but when it comes to your business it can be even more thrilling, doesn't it?
Haha! Enough of the mushiness... Seriously we are glad you chose FastServers and look forward to years of service with your company!
Peace! :D
Josh
speedwell 07-26-2002, 11:48 AM how come the free bandwidth allowance on the $88/month co-location option was reduced from 300GB to 150GB ?
josh@fs 07-26-2002, 12:11 PM speedwell,
The co-location $88 offer has always come with 512 Kb/s for its bandwidth. This works out to be around 150 GB.
The site has been changing alot lately. We are going to put some major time into it this weekend to get everything inline...and probably come up with another great special for all you WHT members!
Josh
speedwell 07-26-2002, 12:27 PM josh,
understood and thanks for the quick reply.
on a somewhat related note, i'm configuring my server now and intend to host at fastservers.
it's really just a machine for my own personal use and since i don't have a lot of money i'm a little concerned about going over my bandwidth allocation and running up enormous charges for a month.
does fastservers offer a capping mechanism that shuts me off after my xxxGb is reached or is there something i can install on my (box) that will do this for me.

You can limit transfer rate using your ftp server config files, check out proftpd.net
To cap Apache (www server) bandwidth rate, use mod_throttle module..
enjoy:D

that's what i thought - thanks... it'd be nice to have a way to do that at the NIC / driver level so i didn't have to remember to do it for each app.
having real problems installing XP on my server.. it was a freebie from a failed .com but 9 identical others from the same place that we now use every day installed perfectly last week.
anyone got any suggestions as where to post questions of this nature (i.e. generic box rather than specific chipset / manufcaturer) ?
thanks in advance
