i've installed e-commerce foa a friend of mine..
everything went well..
except that whenever a customer purchase something..
there is no confirmation email to both the cistomer and the admin..
can anyone help?
is it my server settings?

Well, first there is no software specified in the thread so no feedback there, also you might wanna take into consideration to go directly to the software developer with that questions for some insight resolution, and first make sure you read the manual to see if all steps have been completed.

Did you make sure you set up the email settings properly on the software that you used? Or did you create the software? Is the email server requiring authentication and the server IP not white-listed?

Probably we need a lot more information to really help you out. But it sounds more like a server issue or programming issue - or are you referring to a merchant account not sending the email out? What gateway / IPSP are you using?
