i was logged in as admin via ssh to my ensim box and i wanted to delete the logs for my site so i went to home/virtual/sitex/fst/var/log/httpd and typed rm * -f and hit enter and i got a permission denied error since i wasnt logged in as root. so then i typed su - and logged in as root

then absentmindedly i typed rm * -f again deleting all my files in /root of the server....what do i do now? how to get those files back?

anybody?

please help!

god...if i ever made a listake in my life! :(:(:(:(:(

Heh... well... err a re-install will do the trick but you'll be starting fresh, better try and install to a new HD and mount that old HD to restore the files that are left on the screwed hd

How about mirroring /root from your other ensim box over? :)

i don't have anything except some install files and the mails to root@ ...
so not very important things ...

i dont know what i had in there but they were all there when i got the server and all were *.rpm or something and id prefer to have them back...incase rs ever had a problem with providing me with support bcos of this or so

You can't get them back. Once it's gone, it's gone, but nothing important is stored in /root anyway, unless you put it there, so don't worry about it.

yeah unless you were storing files there.... there shouldnt be anything to worry about.

ok....everything on the server seems to be working fine :)

if someone would be willing to let me download all those files anyway to my system from their ensim 3.0 (linux) box...id feel a lot happier

pls pm me if anyone is willing

thanks a lot for all your quick responses

*.rpm files are not needed. If you ever need them you can just go to rpmfind.net and download the right rpm.

Oh hehe, i misread it, i thought you wiped things like /etc and others, my fault

yeh if its just /root/* there's not much to loose then.

Sry for the confusion :)

I won't say this is the biggest blunder :D but my biggest blunder was when I deleted my first cute lil' game in Basica, deleted all files from my floppy disk :bawling: I had no backups :stickout

Then a decade later, I dropped an important billing SQL database. This time the backup came handy ;)

While your at it linuxnewbie - some people get ensim 3.1 these days freely upgraded from their hosts, if they have to fix anything at root and such.
