Quantum computing has arrived. How will the status quo compete with this? How will a big expensive webhost with 10,000's of sqft of datacenter space compete will Jim Bob and his single quantum server which is 1000x as powerful..

They sell what exactly? Their website tells more about their management than their products. Looks in construction to me.

Seems like a hoax. A project like this would have gained a lot more attention. or it'll be really expensive.

They'll probably do such extraordinary things as solving 1+1 or the tower of hanoi. Or, if they are really in form, some traveling salesman.
It is extremely expensive.

Doesn't look like a hoax to me.

Nah. Web hosting is more than the square footage, it's the availability of multiple pipes, it's power backups, it's what happens when you run out of qubits and need the financial backing to buy more... chipmakers stock may fall, but we're years away from being able to understand the programming that goes into quantum computing (heck, we don't even have the THEORY yet to complete understand many things quantum) or being able to use it in the useful way.

Oh, sorry. I spoke logic. Hold on a sec.

something it will depend on the provider itself

Looks like chip makers aren't ready to call it quits.

80 core chip , too bad it allegedly won't be for consumers

The processors might be arriving soon, but your not going to get 1000x more sites on a server yet till everything else in the server catches up like access speed to data etc...

Seems you feel the same as some experts

If I remember reading correctly, that computer which was able to do the "quantum computing" had to stored in a facility near absolute zero and had to be accessed remotely - I dont think chip makers and web hosting is going any where any time soon :)

Computer is so delicate that it cannot be moved. Hm...
I don't want my websites being hosted there. Not yet.

Sounds "neat" but not for now at all..

I'm in the same mind as some of the others here. We've got a long way to go before something like this really becomes a "threat." I don't think anyone is expecting hosting to be around in its current form, forever.

No, I think webhosting will always be on Dell servers :stickout:

Big expensive webhost will be able to compete because they will have the backing it takes to purchase this quantum server. Now I think Jim Bob could compete with the providers if Jim Bob had the money it would take to harness such a server.

Speculating of course.

They demonstrated the technology and it was covered pretty extensively by the tech press. Apparently in 2008 or 2009 (I'm going from memory here, it's too late to look it up :) ) they're going to be selling time on their quantum computing platform to those that need it.

I don't think this really will have any impact on existing computing infrastructures. There are certain types of problem-solving that really lend themselves to quantum computing but general purpose computing really doesn't.

As far as I remember, quantum computers have different aspects. For example, you cannot "copy" anything. A data can only be transferred, not copied. You can "cut & paste".

I don't remember other aspects, but they are not suitable for use as we know computers today.

The process of increasing computing power and storage capabilities in smaller and smaller volumes while improving power consumption, management abilities, etc has been a trend in this industry since its inception.

I imagine that the large providers (and all providers) will keep doing what they are doing today. The will perform TCO calculations on all scenarios and decide which direction makes more sense to them. Eventually, they will migrate away from aging technology to the newer technology and subsidize the associated costs by realizing the cost savings associated with better utilization of their resources.

Real or not the bottom line is you have to be able to adapt to whatever the industry throws at you or you will fail.
