Hello.

I'm very new at this whole website/domain/hosting thing. I'm not a techie, and am having someone else design and program my site.

My designer told me to sign up at eNom.com for hosting. I really just wanted to get my domain there at the time, but according to something I read on eNom I needed to sign up for a hosting package in order to get the domain name. Since I figured my designer knew what he was doing, I signed up.

My website isn't ready yet, but I've had a couple of questions so I emailed eNom. No reply. I felt like I was in no man's land over there, being inexperienced. It was difficult for me to even figure out how to sign up, which should have been my first clue, but I was excited and eager.

It was equally difficult for me to figure out how to cancel the hosting, but I finally did yesterday. Now I'm wondering....does my domain HAVE to stay there? I know I can point it to another host, but I read yesterday that eNom often hijacks domain names if you try to do that. Apparently, they also hijack them if you let your name expire.

So, if I can't physically move the name to another host, can I delete it? Then I would simply re-request it elsewhere. I need some input on this. I hit a delete button last night at eNom, but it didn't appear it would actually delete the name, just take it off my hosting account.

Am I stuck?

Thanks!

You can transfer the domain name to any registrar you would like. Assuming it is a .com just get the EPP code and make sure the domain is Unlocked and go to another registrar and transfer it there with EPP code.

Ok. I will do that, but can you tell me what an EPP code is and how to find it? Like I said, this is all completely new to me. Oh, and yes, it is a .com name.

Thanks!

The EPP code is like a password that your current domain name registrar has access to and is required to send you if you request it. Please contact your current registrar and request it.

Thanks, Navid! I'm going to call them and request it today since they don't seem to answer my emails!

You cannot transfer the domain away from your current registrar if it's less than 60 days old.

From your 1st message, you appear a little confused. It is not necessary to transfer your domain to the company that does your hosting, or to buy hosting from your domain registrar. They are 2 separate animals, which should be kept separate. Why not just keep your domain where it is currently registered and sign up for hosting with a hosting company. Then you just point your domain to your new hosting package. The webhost can give you clear instructions how to do that.

I understand about the domain being separate from the hosting. The reason I want a different registrar is that I think I can get a better deal than where I'm at now. Also, I HATE enom's website. I've had a very difficult time navigating in there.

I got the EPP for my domain today from enom. My domain was first registered on 12/17/06, so I should be able to transfer the name in about a week.

I will keep the domain separate from my hosting company, I just don't want it at enom anymore.
