View Full Version : Whats a good free Control Panel?
smoked1 02-07-2007, 02:13 PM I have a few web server that I administer here at work. Right now I have a FreeBSD server that runs fine but I host many sites on it and I want to setup a new box with a control panel and move all of the sites over to it. Is there a good free control panel that would work for this? I have looked at a few but I am not sure what would be the best solution. I would really like to see one that gives you an ISO to download so that you can just install the OS and CP at one time.
ayksolutions 02-07-2007, 02:19 PM Not aware of any CP's that allow you to install an OS and CP at the same time as that doesn't give you too much choice on what OS to use. But I'd recommend you check out ServerCP lite at www.zervex.com. We offer it as a free panel and it's pretty solid. Doesn't work on FreeBSD though.
smoked1 02-07-2007, 03:00 PM I don't mind running something other than FreeBSD but the one flavor that I really don't like is RH and it seems that is the only supported OS. I may give it a shot though and give RH another shot.
ayksolutions 02-07-2007, 03:05 PM Well, you can use Webmin if you have a problem with a problem with RH-based OS such as CentOS and FC, not sure why though. Webmin works on Debian. You can also check out VHCS panel, Zpanel.
smoked1 02-07-2007, 03:20 PM I remember reading about one made by SUN a while back but I can't remember the name of it. VHCS looks like it has gone stale but there is a fork at:
http://isp-control.net
thalaric 02-07-2007, 04:01 PM I wouldn't highly suggest it for production use but a new beta of http://web-cp.net is about to be released if you're a developer type.
Full disclosure: I was previously with the project.

It would be for production but there are no clients on the server. It is just our own sites. I will take a look at it. I am going to try out a few of the free control panels out there and see what I like best.
Abu Mami 02-07-2007, 04:22 PM I used Webmin for a few years and it was quite nice. I had a lot of trouble with the server though. I'm not sure if it's because the box was not hardened by the provider, or if Webmin is vulnerable. I just decommisioned a box with Fastservers that had cPanel and barely had any trouble during the three years I had the box with them.
smoked1 02-07-2007, 04:44 PM I like cpanel quite a bit but it is way too expensive for what I am using it for. I am just tired of doing everything from the command line when I know that there is an easier way.
Blackknight 02-07-2007, 05:26 PM Blasphemy. There is no easier way. ;)
I run ASM on my server and it works fine. You can download it at www.acctmgr.com
ISPconfig is also good, it's the only free panel I could find that's still being actively developed.
IPCare 02-07-2007, 06:24 PM You could also try ISPconfig:
http://www.ispconfig.org/
I used in the past for a hobby project, and its quite nice
jonwatson 02-22-2007, 11:05 PM I third ISPConfig. I use it on two different boxes right now and in fact it's one of the hosted open source apps that we offer.
It's nothing short of amazing and as Blackknight pointed out Falko is still actively developing it.
If you go that route, start at the ISPConfig site -> Documentation. At the bottom of that page is a list of "Perfect How To" docs which will show you step-by-step how to install the Distro of your choice so that you can then install ISPConfig onto it without any problems.
Joel Theodore 02-23-2007, 12:10 AM Try looking at SysCP, http://www.syscp.org
It is an excellent free panel. I had to decide between VHCS and SysCP for a client wanting a free box, went with SysCP.

Actually - I think it's Till, not Falko who's developing it. Not really sure...

Cpanel is expensive if you get your own license. If you get a dedicated with an included cpanel license you can save a a lot.
Bye
Has anyone played with ravencore (www.ravencore.com) at all? I installed it quickly to try it out but not got round to it yet
