View Full Version : Confused about Tucows
hammergrrl 02-06-2007, 08:43 AM Good mornin' everyone!
There's a domain set to drop tomorrow that I'd like to get. It's reg'd at Tucows.
Back in '04 there was a big to-do about Tucows implementing auctions, but I can't find any information. I know the big dropcatchers are all affiliated with various registries, and I know they all have different procedures for if/when something goes to auction.
Does anyone know if Tucows gave up on the in-house auctions and affiliated themselves with someone? I feel silly asking, but I Googled and couldn't find anything on how to find out what exactly happens to a Tucows site in Pending Delete.
Thanks in advance, all!
Cheers,

PS It really sucks that as newies, if you "accidentally" use a smilie (must have 5 posts to be allowed) you lose your entire post and must retype. No fun!

www.tucowsauctions.com will also redirect you to the Tucows action site kevin mentions. Afaik, they're still operating, and still suck. But you might well get your domain there.
hammergrrl 02-07-2007, 03:57 AM Thank you so much for the information. It is odd how difficult it is to find what happens to a Tucows registered domain once it enters Pending Delete - couldn't find anything on their website. In fact, in my Google searches, the only really relevant info I found was other questions on webforums asking the same question - how does one backorder a Tucows registered domain?
I haven't the faintest idea how you guys knew where to find this info. But oddly, the domain I want - which according to Pool.com drops tomorrow - isn't listed there. I've searched in several different ways - and it just plain does NOT come up. Even though the "simple search" should bring it up, even if it's not on auction yet.
Looks like their database is crap. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, since there's no info on the Tucows site about the auction site or what happens to to domains that expire, and no info on the auction site about when, exactly, their pending deletes go to auction. I'm not even a reseller or anyone big, just wanted this domain that a someone I know abandoned. I'm nobody in this reseller world, and even I can see that Tucows clearly isn't seriously interested in making money at all on their expiring domains.
Ah well, I guess I'll have to backorder at one of the biggies.
kohashi 02-07-2007, 10:22 AM If pool says it drops on day X you should backorder through them/snapnames/enom if you really want it and think others will too. domaindirect auctions is pre-expired names that owners didnt renew, if nobody bid there I believe it goes into pendingdelete and expires normally. Chances are if nobody took it $15 you should be ok and win on minimum bid at a place like pool.

Have you tried the back button when that happens? ;)
hammergrrl 02-07-2007, 10:59 AM back button - yes! Alas, I got was a big fat blank space. Hmmm. Never had my prematurely grey hairs mistaken for blonde before! LOL
kohashi, what you're saying is domaindirect only has pre-expired domain names up, NOT pending deletes...so if the name is already in pending delete, I have to go to pool/snapnames/enom if I anticipate other bidders, godaddy if I'm confident I'm the only one who wants it.
kohashi 02-07-2007, 03:50 PM Yes, big companies will probably grab it soon after it expires with domain tasting, so i wouldnt risk it if its worth any amount of money to you (greater than cost of using a place like pool).
By "drop" I guess you mean delete from the registry, yes? Not just expired? To drop, assuming a .com, the domain should be in Pending Delete status in the whois.
You can't backorder non eNom registered domain's at eNom's Club Drop auction house. You can do that at Pool, Snapnames and GoDaddy. If you want this domain, then place a $60 bid at both Pool and SnapNames immediately. Between them they capture the lion's share of dropping domains. If you are the only bidder, then you win the domain immediately for $60. If more than 1 person bids, then there is a short private auction between those who backordered the domain. If you don't want to spend $60 for the domain, then you can place a backorder at GoDaddy for $18.95. But you have to pay that upfront and you don't get a refund if they don't capture the domain. You can keep on backordering domains until successful. GoDaddy are not as successful as Pool/Snapnames at capturing expiring domains, but they do have 1 advantage in as much as they continue to monitor the domain. So, in the case of a domain being picked up by a domain taster who then subsequently drops the domain, there is a good chance GoDaddy will capture the domain for you.
Festus2005 02-08-2007, 02:59 AM Did you try http://domaindirect.com? That is where the general public registers domain names for Tucows I believe.
So what happened after the domain dropped, hammergrrl.

Tucows is like Godaddy, Over half of the Registrars out there are resellers
of WildWest which is GoDaddy and everything from all of them
comes back Spot Domains.
Same thing with Tucows, it was a reseller of theirs who has the domain
not them..
What part of Chi are ya from??
If you ever need any help let me know...Toker(at)toker.ws and put
ChiTown in the subject box
PS Want to buy the ChicagoBearsSite.com?
I have a few ChiTown domains too but don't remember which ones..
