View Full Version : Some other panel like hSphere
naumanakbar78 02-02-2007, 01:24 PM Hello!
I am wondering if there is any other hosting solution panel like H-Sphere. I know I can use addons with cPanel to achieve similar results. However, same reservations hold with cPanel that I have with hSphere.
As for hSphere, I really like it. Its feature set is awesome. However, it is still relying on obsolete Apache 1.3.x, which is a big turn off given where the industry stands right now.
A lot of people here highly praise hSphere and I agree with them as far as the features are concerned. What I do not understand is why everyone forgets to mention this specific little detail, which is becoming quite crucial nowadays.
Any guide in this respect would be highly appreciated except for suggesting HSPCompete ;) ; Quite expensive and if Plesk is any hint quite slow.

Tetraboy 02-02-2007, 02:15 PM I think Interworx (http://www.interworx.com/) supports Apache 2. You might want to check it out.

Plesk's not slow if you run the latest versions.
naumanakbar78 02-02-2007, 02:20 PM From what I could guage, Interworx does not come even close to matching hSphere.
I am talking about distributed, multi server, hosting management along with automated account provisioning and billing system. Not to mention registrar integration.

If you want all that you need HSPc+Plesk, HSphere or PEM. If you think HSPc's expensive, you're wasting your time looking at PEM, which brings you back to HSphere.
naumanakbar78 02-02-2007, 02:26 PM So I guess there is no other single system solution for this?
What about multi product integration? For example, AWBS with cPanel and Plesk. Or perhaps some other better custom solution if you can recommend one? Probably with this approach I will have to program my own ordering engine.

Concise Solutions
Layershift Andrew 02-02-2007, 02:29 PM Plesk with Plesk Expand can do distibuted DNS, Mail, Databases, and each "web" server except dns/mail/db's will need to run Plesk, Apache/IIS and MySQL (for plesk itself).
You should look for a solution which supports Expand if you want to go this route.
naumanakbar78 02-02-2007, 03:03 PM What about the possibility of integrating hSphere with Plesk? I mean write addon/module for hSphere to use Plesk as the web server rather than its own web server. I am a programmer basically and can do the necessary programming if it is possible.
I looked at Expand, it is good and can be very handy. However, as you said the only real competitors to hSphere are HSP or PEM.
And if I have to distribute the CP for customers over individual servers, why not keep the best possible backend. Basically, it is only the Apache 1.3 support that holds hSphere down. If that can be done through Plesk, then why not keep hSphere on the management side and use Plesk as CP?
Layershift Andrew 02-02-2007, 03:09 PM HSPc doesn't natively support distributed services (except DNS). It uses Plesk Expand to provide centralised mail & databases.
I don't see the point (assuming it'd work) of integrating hsphere with expand/plesk. You'd be better off integrating it with Modernbill, or similar, if you can't afford HSPc.
You might be better asking hsphere if they will support apache 2.x soon.
dzeanah 02-02-2007, 03:15 PM it is still relying on obsolete Apache 1.3.xJust curious. Why are you so opposed to using Apache 1.3?
naumanakbar78 02-02-2007, 03:18 PM You slightly misuderstood the point. Instead of using Expand, which still has some limitations, why not go with hSphere. As in hSphere takes the place of Expand.
Plesk will be limited to controlling Web site specific controls and nothing else.
naumanakbar78 02-02-2007, 03:39 PM Just curious. Why are you so opposed to using Apache 1.3?
Good question.
Although, so far all new applications/modules etc are able to support both Apache 1.3 and 2.x. However, I am not sure if that will remain the case in future specially with PHP and RubyOnRails. Not to mention the newer capabilities that Apache has like Filters.
Also, I am not really sure how scalable 1.3 is. I know cPanel runs on 1.3, which is the most popular CP around at the moment.
Perhaps at the end of the day, it is a matter of personal choice and I being a programmer myself dont trust 1.3 much.

Or just re-write the bits of HSphere needed to make it work with Apache v2.

Well I am already discussing that option of hSphere forums
