View Full Version : Capacitors in Raq4i
Xapmat 02-01-2007, 06:16 PM Hi all,
I have a few blown capacitors in a Raq4i. They are marked with 1200uF 10v. I am lookin for replacements for them. Any ideas on where I can get them?
Thanks!
K
rainboiboi 02-05-2007, 04:33 PM any electronics shop selling parts will do..
do be careful when you desolder and solder them on the board...
good luck
gnetwerker 02-07-2007, 03:56 AM Anything with the correct capacitance, same (or prefer slightly higher) voltage spec, and that will physically fit will do. Go to Radio Snack, or buy a dead m'board on eBay and scavenge. I think that Gerald Waugh of FrontStreetNetworks does Raq HW support, and may be of help as well, if you're willing to spend a touch of $$.
Xapmat 02-07-2007, 11:02 AM Thanks for the replies. I found some at Allied online for about $.30 each. Yay! And I have a friend who can do the soldering.
zeffie 02-08-2007, 10:01 PM I'm curious, did they really blow up/explode?

2 of the ones next to the processor were actually split open and stuff was coming out of them. The others were just bulged.
zeffie 02-22-2007, 01:28 PM WOW... Never saw one like that... I'm very curious if this board ever works again, so please post your results...
Xapmat 02-22-2007, 01:31 PM The box was working with the blown one. Pretty sure they were in series just to keep the power regulated. I just ended up replacing all 5 next to the cpu and it's running fine.
dincom 02-26-2007, 11:00 PM I have pictures showing blown / bulging capacitors here

Welcome!
Mr. Dincom has a good little site: here is the real link to his BlueQuartz site: www.dincom.co.uk/bq
(he can't post it because he's new here)
zeffie 02-27-2007, 03:33 AM LOL Well thats funny, But I can't help but wonder if Strogbolt offers discounts if you spam for them...
Those are just prego's btw... nothing special.
dincom 02-27-2007, 05:21 AM LOL Well thats funny, But I can't help but wonder if Strogbolt offers discounts if you spam for them....
Just for the record, I don't have any connection to Strongbolt or get discount. I certainly don't enter in, promote or condoln spam of any form.
Like many within the BlueQuartz community that had helped, advised and encouraged James in his work. I did get an early beta iso to test and evaluate, but that's it.
I am suprised from your comments in this thread, that you haven't seen this bulging/burst capacitor issue before. It seems that about 10% of the systems I've worked on have this issue to some degree. It could be that the systems I've seen havent all been in service in perfect environmental conditions etc.. and therefore a sign of overheating.
Best Regards,
Howie
gnetwerker 02-27-2007, 05:32 AM Note that Mr. Dines (Dincom) provides free packages, and provides them equally for the 550OS, CentOS+BQ/StrongBolt, and rackstar.
Zeffie, on the other hand, is in the business of selling support for his own variant of the Raq4 OS, so he's against everything else. (Though he does provide file hosting for Raq OSRCDs, patches, and whatnot).
Nothing to see here, move along ...
zeffie 02-27-2007, 06:57 AM Note that (privacy snip) provides free packages, and provides them equally for the 550OS, CentOS+BQ/StrongBolt, and rackstar.
Ok First off any 550 gui pkg will run on any bluequartz system... EVEN MINE!
I'm just not going to suggest to people that these products are good and I'm not going to let you answer every post in my forum with a go get strongbolt answer! And even here, when people ask a question the answer is not "Go Buy Strongbolt!" ...
Now, do You Relize I have made and maintain more free cobalt pkgs and rpms then any other person/company? I have made more free cobalt community software provided more FREE support then anybody out there!
Zeffie, on the other hand, is in the business of selling support
Yep and that supports my ability to make updates, etc and in case you didn't know it.. Allows me to go out and help people in places like this with free answers.
for his own variant of the Raq4 OS,
it's not my own variant unless you want to include the php5 upgrade and adding mysql...
so he's against everything else.
Not True! I just haven't seen anything I would reccomend to a business.
(Though he does provide file hosting for Raq OSRCDs, patches, and whatnot).
lol... I provide about 30 gig of everything a Cobalt RaQ2 RaQ4 or XTR user needs to run and maintain a very stable and secure server. and I do it for free!
dincom 02-27-2007, 07:47 AM I'm going to come to the defense of zeffie here !
Yeh sure zeffie runs a business, we all have to pay the bills somehow. He certainly has a bit of a repository of the RaQ iso's and pkg files! and this web space and bandwidth is supported/sponsored by his business side.
What we have to remember is that it's his knowledge and experience that whilst developing his own variants of packages, also rubs off all everyone else. It can be the odd update or it can be hardware knowledge. It's also not just Zeffie, it's Bruce T, Gerald W etc..... just look around most Raq related websites and these names are not far away.
Mud slinging doesn't achieve anything, we have to be positive and look after each other. My boss always tells me 'don't get emotional, be constructive'
For me 'Dincom' is a hobby, sometimes I work more hours on it by night than I work during the day in my regular job, but that's what makes it fun.
My reason for doing it was to give help to others that , I won't say know less, but rather say haven't discovered various Raq issues. I wanted fill in the missing bits in some of the FAQ's.
I myself found that people with the knowledge on a subject often miss some of the detail. When you are trying to learn, it's the small and missing detail that you get hung up on.
Well that my 2p worth,
Best Regards,
Howie

Methinks thou doth protest too much.(*)
Also for the record, Zeffie provides a valuable service to the Raq community by hosting OSRCDs, patches, etc and providing updated PKGs, though many with substantial Raq experience (including a number of original Cobalt developers!) disagree with him about the viability of some Raq OS options.
And Mr. Dines is right, of course, civilized discourse is the correct path.

dincom 02-27-2007, 06:40 PM Thanks,
Howie.
Xapmat 02-27-2007, 11:44 PM I love how any thread here can turn into a bitch match. From capacitors to how some people charge vs free software...
You two crazy kids just need a hug.
:D
pipetawer 01-14-2008, 01:33 PM Greetings people, I had two raqs (a 4 and a 4i) the raq 4 (only 1 eth interface) did not worked correctly, the eth port failed responding. The second raq 4i (with two eth) had its primary interface failing and the secondary worked fine.
I had someone changed the capacitors (1200 uF 10v). He changed 10 for the Raq 4 (all of the next to the processor and some downwards) and some for the Raq 4i. The Raq4 is now working great, the Raq 4i is working but was still the primary eth unresponsive. I might add that you need someone with experience to change the capacitors, they are VERY close to the CPU and my friend told me that any extra heat could easily damage the CPU.
Just wanted to share this with everyone. Also I bought 50 capacitors 1200uF 10v, I got around 30 left if anyone interested I can sell all 30 for $15 + shipping. Any interseted email me to ftorres (at) tamu.edu.
zeffie 02-02-2008, 12:08 PM yes the CPU should always be removed and since this is a multi layer board excess heat should not be used.
I think it's also important to note that it's important to use the same physical size caps.. larger thicker leads can cause problems...
